Nestled within the Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia becomes a picturesque winter wonderland when snow blankets its rugged landscape. Whether you’re looking for cozy small-town charm or thrilling outdoor activities, the Mountain State offers a plethora of destinations perfect for a winter getaway. Here are the 9 best towns to visit during the colder months:

.Lewisburg– A cultural hub with a historic downtown, Lewisburg charms visitors with its antique shops and cozy eateries. The nearby Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs provides luxury lodging and winter sports opportunities.

.Elkins – Home to the annual Winter International Festival, Elkins is an idyllic spot for those wanting to immerse themselves in local traditions and performances. Its proximity to the Monongahela National Forest also makes it ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

.Davis – With skiing and snowboarding at Canaan Valley Resort and nearby Blackwater Falls State Park known for its cascading frozen waterfall, Davis is a haven for winter adventurers.

.Fayetteville – Though primarily known for summer adventures around the New River Gorge, Fayetteville offers wintertime activities such as hiking trails that transform into picturesque snowy routes.

.Cass – Step back in time with a visit to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park where you can ride historic steam-driven locomotives through a snowy mountain landscape, though it’s important to check seasonal schedules.

.Snowshoe – Aptly named, Snowshoe is one of the most popular ski resorts in West Virginia boasting an expansive range of slopes and trails. The village at the summit provides entertainment and dining options as well.

.Berkeley Springs – Known for its warm mineral springs, Berkeley Springs offers relaxation even on the chilliest days alongside quaint bookstores and art galleries that line its historic streets.

.Thomas – This small artsy town is quickly becoming well-known for its vibrant main street filled with galleries, cafes, and live music venues; it’s also close to some great backcountry skiing spots.

.Charles Town– Explore West Virginia’s rich history with a visit to Charles Town, featuring historical sites and the nearby Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races for those looking for indoor entertainment.

Each of these towns provides something unique—from skiing excursions to simple respite from daily routines—ensuring that your winter getaway in West Virginia will be memorable.
