3 Ways to Treat Eyebrow and Eyelash Lice

Eyebrow and eyelash lice, also known as Phthiriasis palpebrarum, is an infestation of the tiny insects called lice. Though it’s a rare condition, it can cause discomfort, irritation, and even damage to your eyelashes and eyebrows. If you suspect that you have lice in your eyebrow or eyelash area, it’s important to take action quickly to avoid complications. Here are three ways to treat this pesky problem:

1. Over-the-counter (OTC) treatments:

There are various over-the-counter treatments available for managing eyebrow and eyelash lice. These products typically contain a pesticide called pyrethrin or permethrin, which is effective at killing adult lice and their eggs. To use these products, follow the steps below:

– Carefully read the instructions on the label.

– Apply the product as directed using a clean cotton swab or cloth.

– Be cautious while applying around the eyes to prevent contact with the eye itself.

– After the suggested time has elapsed, gently clean the area with warm water and a mild soap.

– Repeat if necessary until no signs of lice remain.

Note: Consult your healthcare professional or a pharmacist for their recommendations on OTC treatment options.

2. Prescription medication:

If OTC treatments prove ineffective or if you have a severe infestation, your healthcare professional may prescribe medication specifically for eyebrow and eyelash lice. Some commonly prescribed medications include malathion lotion (Ovide) or ivermectin (Stromectol). Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully while using these medications and ensure that you report any side effects.

3. Manual removal:

In cases where chemical treatments aren’t suitable, such as in pregnant women or individuals with allergies, manual removal of lice may be necessary. This involves using a fine-toothed comb or tweezers to remove the adult lice and their eggs from your eyebrows and eyelashes. Follow these steps:

– Carefully inspect your eyebrows and eyelashes with a magnifying glass and bright light.

– Use a fine-toothed comb, tweezers, or your fingernails to gently remove lice from your eyebrows.

– For eyelashes, you can use a pair of tweezers to carefully pluck each individual louse and its eggs.

– Place the removed lice and eggs on a tissue and discard in a sealed plastic bag.

– Clean the affected area with warm water and mild soap after removal.

Remember to treat your personal items such as brushes, combs, towels, and pillowcases by washing them in hot water or sealing them in a plastic bag for at least two weeks. Also, it’s essential to notify close contacts about the infestation. While treating eyebrow and eyelash lice can be challenging due to the sensitivity of the area, proper care and treatment will ultimately help you eliminate the infestation.
