3 Ways to Tell If a Soft Contact Lens Is Inside Out

Wearing contact lenses has become a popular alternative to traditional eyeglasses. However, for new users or even some experienced wearers, it can sometimes be challenging to determine if their soft contact lens is inside out. The consequences of wearing an inverted lens can cause discomfort and blurred vision, but worry not! Here are three easy methods to determine if your soft contact lens is inside out.

1. The Taco Test

The first and most well-known method is the taco test. To perform this test, simply place the contact lens on the tip of your index finger with the edges facing upward. Carefully bring the two edges of contact together by gradually folding it in half, as if you were making a taco or pinching something.

If the contact gently forms into a taco shape, and the edges curl inward, then your lens is correctly shaped for insertion. However, if the edges flare outward or create a distinct ridge when attempting to fold it like a taco, this indicates that your lens is inside out.

2. The Bowl Test

Another helpful technique to determine if your contact lens is inside out is the bowl test. Place the lens on your index finger with the edges facing up, as if it’s a bowl resting on your fingertip.

If the edges naturally curve upwards and form a smooth “U” shape, implying that your contact lens resembles a perfect little bowl – then it’s in its correct orientation for use. In contrast, if you notice a slight outward flare at the top of the lens where edges form more of an “V” shape or garnished-rim plate instead of an inverted “U,” this suggests that the lens is positioned incorrectly.

3. The 3-2-1 Test

One last method for examining your soft contact lenses is the 3-2-1 test. Hold up your contact lens so it’s at eye level and observe it closely. Notice if there are any numbers or marked lines on the lens, as some manufacturers provide these indicators to help users recognize the correct orientation of their lenses.

If you’re able to read or see the numbers or lines clearly – upright and not distorted – this means that the lens is indeed ready for insertion. However, if the markings are backward, distorted, or difficult to decipher, your contact lens is most likely inside-out.

In conclusion, these three simple yet effective methods – the taco test, bowl test, and 3-2-1 test – can help you determine if your soft contact lenses are inside out before insertion. Remember to always handle your contact lenses with clean hands and to clean them regularly in accordance with your optometrist’s recommendations. This will ensure safe usage and maintain optimal eye care while enjoying the benefits of clear vision with soft contact lenses.
