Hedgehogs are considered to be unique, adorable and curious animals. As they’ve grown in popularity as pets, many hedgehog owners quickly discover that their prickly friend may require some effort when it comes to taming and building trust. If you’re a new hedgehog owner or considering bringing one home, here are three effective ways to tame a hedgehog.

1. Create a Comfortable Environment

The first step in taming your hedgehog is to create a comfortable living space. Hedgehogs are naturally nocturnal creatures, so it’s important to have a quiet area with dim lighting for them to call home during the day. Additionally, make sure they have access to plenty of warm bedding materials, hiding places and lots of room to explore.

Maintain a consistent temperature between 72-80°F (22-27°C) in their enclosure as temperature fluctuations can cause stress. Providing sensory items such as different textures and surfaces for your hedgehog can increase their level of comfort within their environment.

2. Patience and Routine Handling

Patience is key when it comes to taming a hedgehog. Initially, your hedgehog may be fearful when you try to handle them, but with time they will become more trusting and easier to pick up. Be consistent when handling your hedgehog – spend at least 30 minutes each day interacting with them.

To safely and comfortably handle your hedgehog, use both hands by placing them under its belly between the legs or scooping the animal up with one hand under its belly while supporting it from behind with the other hand. Allow it time to explore your hands without forcing any engagement and avoid making sudden movements.

3. Positive Associations

Creating positive associations for your hedgehog can help them feel more comfortable around you. Offer treats like mealworms or small pieces of fruit in order to encourage positive interactions; however, treats should be given in moderation.

Another technique is scent bonding. Leave an old, unwashed t-shirt or a small piece of fabric with your scent in their enclosure. This allows your hedgehog to become familiar with your scent, helping them to recognize and trust you as a caretaker.

Taming your hedgehog requires time, patience and love. Establishing trust between you and your hedgehog will result in a rewarding, lifelong bond. Remember that individual hedgehogs will react differently to each approach, so it’s important to monitor their temperament and adjust your methods accordingly.
