Once you’ve enjoyed a delicious smoked turkey dinner, you’re likely to find yourself with leftovers. Rather than letting them go to waste, consider these three ways to store your smoked turkey for maximum flavor and freshness.

1. Refrigeration

The simplest way to store leftover smoked turkey is in the refrigerator. This method is perfect when you plan on eating the remaining turkey within the next few days. Follow these steps to ensure proper storage and avoid spoilage:

1. Remove any bones and slice or shred the meat.
2. Place the turkey pieces in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag.
3. Label the container or bag with the date and type of meat.
4. Place it at the back of the refrigerator where temperatures are most consistent.
5. Consume refrigerated smoked turkey within 3-4 days.

1. Freezing

For long-term storage, freezing is an excellent option. Not only does it preserve the flavor of your smoked turkey, but it also allows you to portion out servings for future meals, such as sandwiches or casseroles. Follow these steps for proper freezing:

1. Remove any bones from the smoked turkey and cut it into portions that will be easy to reheat and use in recipes.
2. Wrap each portion tightly in plastic wrap, then again in aluminum foil to minimize exposure to air.
3. Label each wrapped portion with the date and contents.
4. Place wrapped portions in a resealable plastic freezer bag for added protection against freezer burn.
5. Store your smoked turkey in the coldest part of your freezer for up to four months.

2. Vacuum Sealing

If you want to extend the shelf life of your smoked turkey even further, consider using a vacuum sealer system, which effectively eliminates air exposure and prevents bacterial growth.

1. Remove bones and slice or shred the turkey into desired portions.
2. Place the portions in vacuum-sealable bags, ensuring that each bag is not overfilled.
3. Label each bag with the date and contents.
4. Follow the instructions for your vacuum sealer to remove air and seal each bag tightly.
5. Store vacuum-sealed turkey in the freezer for up to six months.

By following these three methods for storing smoked turkey, you’ll be able to savor the delicious flavor of your leftovers for weeks or even months to come. Not only will this help reduce food waste, but it also allows you to enjoy a delicious meal without the need to cook every day!
