3 Ways to Skateboard for Beginners

Introduction:
Skateboarding is not only a popular sport and mode of transportation, but it’s also a great way to express yourself and have fun. As a beginner, learning how to ride a skateboard can be challenging and intimidating, but don’t worry. With some practice, patience, and perseverance, you’ll be cruising in no time. Here are three techniques to help beginners get started with skateboarding.
1. Find Your Stance:
Before you start skateboarding, you need to find your stance. The two main stances are regular (left foot forward) or goofy (right foot forward). To determine your stance, think about which foot you naturally put forward when walking or running. This will likely be the most comfortable foot to place at the front of your skateboard.
Another way to identify your stance is to imagine sliding on ice or hardwood floors— which foot would you put first? Whichever feels natural in these situations should likely be your front foot when skateboarding.
2. Pushing and Maintaining Balance:
Once you have determined your proper stance, it’s time to start moving. Position your front foot near the front bolts of the board and angle slightly it towards the nose (the nose is the upwards curving part at the front of the board). Make sure your shoulders are parallel with your skateboard and bend your knees slightly for better balance.
Place your back foot on the ground beside the tail of the skateboard, and gently push off with your back foot while maintaining balance on your front foot. Keep practicing this pushing motion until you gain confidence in your ability to maintain balance on one foot while moving.
3. Turning:
As you gain more control over keeping yourself balanced on the skateboard, learning how to turn is essential for navigating different terrains and avoiding obstacles.
There are two main types of turns:
a. Carving – To carve, simply shift your weight towards your toes or heels while riding. Lean forward for toe side turns, and lean back for heel side turns. Practice shifting your weight to make subtle adjustments in your direction.
b. Kick Turns – To perform a kick turn, place your back foot on the tail of the skateboard and slightly raise the front wheels off the ground as you pivot on the back wheels. Simultaneously, slightly lean your front foot in the direction you wish to turn to guide you. With practice, you will get a feel for these movements and become more comfortable with them.
Conclusion:
Skateboarding can be an exciting and rewarding activity when starting with the right techniques. Remember that practice is key – don’t be discouraged if it takes some time to gain confidence and ability. Keep practicing these basic techniques, find others who share your passion for skateboarding, and most importantly, have fun on your journey!
