3 Ways to Sew a Lining in a Bag

A well-crafted bag is incomplete without a lining. Not only does it provide an attractive interior finish, but it also protects the contents of your bag and reinforces its overall structure. In this article, we will discuss three different methods for sewing a lining into your bag: the drop-in method, the turn-inside-out method, and the pillowcase method.
1. The Drop-In Method
The drop-in method is a popular technique for adding a lining to your bag because it leaves all raw edges concealed neatly inside. Here’s how to do it:
a) First, sew the lining fabric together using the same seam allowance as you did when making your bag. Leave a gap of about 4 inches in one of the side seams so you can later turn the whole thing right-side-out.
b) Next, place the lining inside your bag with the right sides of both fabrics facing each other. Match and pin together both pieces at the top edge.
c) Sew around the top perimeter of your bag with a seam allowance that matches what you used on the exterior fabric.
d) Reach through that gap in the lining side seam, and pull out both sides of your bag to turn it right-side-out.
e) Sew up that gap in the lining by folding under its raw edges and topstitching them together.
f) Finally, push the lining back into your bag, smooth it out, and press everything in place with an iron.
2. The Turn-Inside-Out Method
This one may seem counterintuitive at first glance but bear with us; it’s just as effective:
a) Begin by sewing together two identical bags – one from your exterior fabric and another from your lining fabric. Leave one long side seam unsewn on each of these bags.
b) Now place one bag inside the other, with right sides facing each other.
c) Sew along the top edge of the two bags, connecting them together.
d) Turn both the exterior and lining fabric inside-out through one of those open side seams.
e) Next, sew up those previously unsewn side seams.
f) Last, push the lining back into your bag, make sure everything is smooth, and press all layers with an iron.
3. The Pillowcase Method
The pillowcase method is a simple, beginner-friendly technique for adding a lining to your bag:
a) First, cut out fabric for your bag exterior and lining by using the same measurements and pattern pieces.
b) Sew together both sets of fabric separately with right sides facing each other. Leave a small gap in a side seam of each piece.
c) After putting the right side back on both exterior and lining segments, insert them into each other with wrong sides together.
d) Now simply stitch around the top edge to join both parts together. You can optionally fold under and press the raw edges before sewing for a neater finish.
e) Hand-sew or machine-stitch those gaps closed in both exterior and lining side seams.
Each of these methods has its advantages and is suitable for various bag styles and sewing skill levels. Experiment with these techniques to find the one that works best for you and give your crafted bags a polished look inside and out. Happy sewing!
