3 Ways to Sew a Button on Pants

Sewing a button on pants is an essential life skill that can save you time and money. Instead of discarding your favorite pair of pants when a button falls off, simply sew it back on using one of these three methods. In this article, we’ll explore three ways to sew a button on pants: the classic method, the shank method, and the no-sew method.
1. The Classic Method
This is the traditional way to sew a button onto fabric and works well for pants with thin or medium-thick fabrics. You’ll need a needle, thread, and a spare button.
Step 1: Thread your needle with about 18 inches of thread and knot the ends together.
Step 2: Position the button over the marked spot where it’s meant to be attached.
Step 3: Insert the needle through the back of the fabric, pull it through one of the buttonholes, and then push it back down through the opposite hole.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 several times (about six) to secure the button tightly.
Step 5: Finish by pushing the needle through to the underside of the fabric, then loop it around the threads under the button and tie a knot.
2. The Shank Method
The shank method is best for pants made from thicker fabrics or when you need extra space between the button and fabric for easy fastening. You’ll need a needle, thread, spare button, and a toothpick or small stick.
Step 1: Follow steps 1-2 from the classic method.
Step 2: Place a toothpick or small stick on top of your button to create some space.
Step 3: Perform step 3 from the classic method but make sure to go around the toothpick as well. Keep sewing until you’ve made several passes securing all buttonholes.
Step 4: Remove the toothpick and pull the button away from the fabric to create a shank of thread. Insert the needle through the formed shank and wrap the thread around it a few times.
Step 5: Finish by pushing the needle back through the fabric, tying a knot, and cutting off any excess thread.
3. The No-Sew Method
If you’re in a hurry or don’t have sewing supplies handy, try the no-sew method using a button with a wire loop at its back. You’ll need pliers, a spare button (with wire loop), and a matchstick or paperclip.
Step 1: Thread the matchstick or paperclip through the wire loop attached to the button.
Step 2: Position your button at the desired spot on your pants, then insert one end of the attached matchstick/paperclip through the fabric from behind.
Step 3: Using pliers, bend both ends of the wires flat against the fabric so it is secure.
Step 4: Remove the matchstick or paperclip, and your button will be fastened.
In conclusion, don’t let a missing button on your pants cause frustration. Practice these three methods and be prepared to sew buttons onto pants whenever needed. Happy sewing!
