3 Ways to Pry off a Watch Backing Without Proper Tools

Whether you are replacing a watch battery or trying to make a minor repair, removing the watch backing can be a challenge without the proper tools. However, there are several alternative methods you can try to pry off the watch backing, even if you don’t have access to specialized watch repair gear. Here are three ways to safely remove the back of your watch without causing damage.

1. The Flathead Screwdriver Method

With just an ordinary flathead screwdriver, you can attempt to pry off the watch backing. To do so, follow these steps:

– Find a small flathead screwdriver that will fit into the small gap between the watch back and case.

– Place a cloth or protective material between the screwdriver and watch case to prevent scratches or other damage.

– Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the gap and gently apply pressure in an upward motion.

– Work your way around the edge of the watch back until it pops open.

Keep in mind that this method may not work for all watches, especially those with screw-down backs.

2. The Tape and Scissors Method

Using some adhesive tape and a pair of scissors, you might be able to gain enough leverage to remove a press-fit type watch back. Here’s how:

– First, clean and dry the surface of your watch backing to ensure optimal adhesion.

– Cut two pieces of strong adhesive tape, slightly longer than necessary for easier handling.

– Press one end of each piece onto opposite sides of the watch back, ensuring there is enough slack for holding.

– Firmly grip both exposed ends of tape using your thumb and index fingers.

– Simultaneously pull both ends with constant force until there is enough leverage to lift off the watch back.

3. The Kitchen Knife Method

In some cases, it might be possible to use a thin-blade kitchen knife like a butter or paring knife in the place of a specialized watch case opener. Be cautious when using a sharp knife, and take the following steps:

– Wrap a cloth around any sharp edges of the knife to protect your fingers and prevent the watch case from being scratched.

– Locate the indentation or notch that is typically found along the edge of a watch back.

– Gently slide the knife blade into the indentation and apply a slow, steady force in an upward direction.

– Once you feel the back begin to lift, carefully work your way around the edge to free it entirely.

Remember, attempting these methods carries some risk, and they may not be suitable for all watches. If you’re uncomfortable with these techniques or worried about damaging your watch, it’s always best to consult with a professional watch repair service for safe removal of the watch back.
