3 Ways to Make a Coyote Trap

Introduction:

Coyotes are highly adaptive predators and can become a nuisance to landowners and farmers who need to protect their livestock and property. Trapping is an effective method to control the coyote population. In this article, we will discuss three ways to make a coyote trap, so you can successfully catch and manage these elusive creatures.

1. Foot-hold traps:

Foot-hold traps are among the most widely used trapping methods for trapping coyotes. They typically consist of a steel jaw device that clamps down on the animal’s leg when triggered. To make a foot-hold trap:

– Choose the appropriate size trap for coyotes (usually sizes #2 – #4).

– Select a location frequented by coyotes, such as near their dens, trails, or watering holes.

– Dig a shallow hole and bed the trap securely, ensuring it is level with the ground.

– Create a dirt pattern around the trap using surrounding soil or other natural materials to camouflage it.

– Use bait or lure, such as meat or scents, to attract coyotes to the trap.

2. Snare traps:

Snare traps are another effective method for trapping coyotes. Consisting of a metal cable looped into a noose, snare traps tighten when an animal passes through and pulls on the loop. To make a snare trap:

– Acquire a snare cable with an appropriate length for capturing coyotes (around 5 feet long).

– Attach one end of the snare cable to an anchor point, like a stake driven into the ground or nearby tree.

– Create the noose end by passing the other end of the cable through its loop.

– Set the snare at a height of about 10 inches above ground level on animal trails or known paths used by coyotes.

– Attach flagging or reflective tape near the snare, making it visible to humans to avoid accidental injury.

3. Cage traps:

Cage traps appeal to individuals who prefer a non-lethal approach and wish to relocate captured coyotes. These traps feature a door or opening that closes once the animal enters. To make a cage trap:

– Purchase or build a durable cage made from solid wire mesh or metal bars.

– The cage should be large enough to accommodate a fully grown coyote (minimum dimensions of 48 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 24 inches high).

– Set-up the cage in an area where coyote activity has been observed.

– Bait the trap with meat or other scents that attract coyotes, and place it inside or near the back of the cage.

– Configure the door mechanism so it shuts securely upon the coyote’s entry.

Conclusion:

Trapping coyotes can be an effective way to manage their population while preventing damage to your property and livestock. Remember always to follow local laws and regulations related to trapping, use humane methods, and be respectful of wildlife. With knowledge and practice, these three traps can successfully catch coyotes for responsible management.
