3 Ways to Iron a Shirt

Ironing a shirt may seem like a simple task, but to achieve that crisp, professional finish, it’s essential to know the proper techniques. In this article, we’ll walk you through three different ways to iron your shirt: using a standard steam iron, using a garment steamer, and employing the spray-and-smooth method. Whichever method you choose, your shirt will look immaculate and ready for any occasion.

1. Using a Steam Iron

For this classic technique, make sure your steam iron is filled with water and set to the appropriate temperature according to the fabric of your shirt.

Step 1: Start with the collar.

Lay your shirt flat on an ironing board, with the collar unfolded. First press the underside of the collar with your iron, then flip it over and press the top side.

Step 2: Move on to the shoulders.

Position the yoke (the section connecting both shoulders) near the edge of the ironing board. Iron from one shoulder down towards the opposite armhole.

Step 3: Tackle the sleeves.

Lay one sleeve flat on the board, with seams aligned at both edges. Begin by pressing the cuff (both sides), before working your way towards the shoulder. Repeat for the other sleeve.

Step 4: Iron the body.

With buttons facing up, start at one side seam and slowly work across to the opposite side, using sideways motions. Don’t forget to iron between each row of buttons!

2. Using a Garment Steamer

A garment steamer can be more convenient for quick touch-ups as it doesn’t require an ironing board.

Step 1: Hang your shirt on a hanger. Be sure there’s space for steam to flow around it.

Step 2: Fill your steamer with water and turn it on.

Step 3: Starting at the top of the shirt, move the steamer head smoothly over each section, pulling the fabric taut for better results. Steam the collar, shoulders, sleeves, and lastly, the body.

3. Spray-and-Smooth Method

If you don’t own an iron or steamer, this is an alternative solution to get rid of wrinkles.

Step 1: Mix equal parts of water and fabric softener in a spray bottle.

Step 2: Lay your shirt on a flat and clean surface or hang it up.

Step 3: Spray a fine mist over the wrinkled areas.

Step 4: Use your hands to gently smooth out wrinkles.

While ironing your shirts may seem like a simple task, knowing the proper techniques will ensure you achieve a crisp professional finish every time. Try out these three methods and determine which one works best for you.
