3 Ways to Investigate Nonprofit Companies

Introduction:

Nonprofit companies, also frequently referred to as NGO’s, NPO’s, or charitable organizations, play a crucial role in addressing various issues and contributing to social upliftment. While they work towards a cause and can have a positive impact on the community, it is essential to thoroughly investigate nonprofit organizations before making donations or volunteering your time. This article presents a guide to evaluate these organizations by discussing three ways to investigate nonprofit companies.

1. Research Their Background and Financial Transparency

The first step in investigating a nonprofit organization is to research its background and financial transparency.

– Start by examining their website, where you can typically find information about their services, history, accomplishments, and goals.

– Look for an annual report or financial statement that provides details on the sources of funding and how money is being spent.

– Review their tax returns (Form 990) which offer insights into the organization’s monetary operations as well as key employee compensation.

– Research their rating from independent evaluators like Charity Navigator, BBB Wise Giving Alliance (USA), or Charity Intelligence (Canada). These evaluators rank nonprofits based on factors like financial health, governance practices, and transparency.

2. Assess Impact and Effectiveness

As the ultimate goal of any nonprofit is to create real change within society, assessing their impact and effectiveness is crucial while investigating them.

– Explore the organization’s website or reports for measurable outcomes of their programs or services. They need to have clearly defined goals and metrics for success.

– Check if they maintain accountability with their constituents by soliciting feedback from members, partners or people served by the non-profit organization.

– Observe their approach towards collaborations with other organizations. Effective charities often build partnerships or engage in collaborations that add value to a common cause.

– Lastly, evaluate whether the non-profit is innovative and adaptive in addressing pressing social problems with creative solutions.

3. Inquire about Volunteer and Employee Experience

Understanding the experience of volunteers and employees can provide a more comprehensive view of a nonprofit company’s internal functioning.

– Read reviews and testimonials from volunteers and employees on websites like Glassdoor or GreatNonprofits — this will give you unique insights into the work culture, values, and morale.

– Reach out to current or former volunteers, employees, or community stakeholders through social media platforms for genuine conversations about what it’s like to work with the organization.

– Attend events, workshops or seminars organized by the nonprofit to connect with other volunteers, staff members or beneficiaries and gather more information.

Conclusion:

Investigating nonprofit companies is not only an essential part of making informed decisions while offering donations or volunteering your time but also helps ensure that your support goes to legitimate organizations that are making a positive impact on their respective causes. A combination of financial transparency research, impact assessment, and understanding the volunteer and employee experiences will allow you to choose the right organization for supporting your desired social cause.
