3 Ways to Groom a Longhair Dachshund

Longhair Dachshunds are adorable and loving dogs known for their unique physique and beautiful, flowing coats. However, their long fur requires regular grooming to keep them looking their best and feeling comfortable. Here are three ways to groom a longhair Dachshund to ensure they remain healthy and happy.

1. Brushing

Regular brushing is essential for longhair Dachshunds to prevent matting and keep their fur in top condition. Aim to brush your Dachshund at least 2-3 times a week, or even daily if possible, to maintain a tangle-free coat.

First, equip yourself with the right tools – a slicker brush, a comb with both wide and narrow teeth, and an undercoat rake for removing loose hair beneath the topcoat. Start by using the slicker brush on your dog’s entire body, brushing in the direction of hair growth, and focusing on areas prone to tangles like behind the ears and under the belly. Follow this with the comb to remove any remaining knots and finish by using the undercoat rake gently to remove any loose hair.

2. Bathing

Bathing your longhair Dachshund is essential to keeping their skin clean and reducing odors. Depending on your dog’s activities and lifestyle, aim for monthly baths or more frequently if necessary.

When bathing, use lukewarm water, start from the head (avoiding eyes and ears), and work your way down to the tail using dog-specific shampoo. Lather gently in circular motions and take extra care when washing sensitive areas like the groin or armpit folds. Rinse thoroughly to avoid residue buildup that could cause itching or irritation. After rinsing, towel-dry your Dachshund as much as possible before allowing them to air dry indoors or using a pet-safe blow dryer on a low heat setting.

3. Nail Trimming and Ear Cleaning

Regular nail trimming is vital for your longhair Dachshund’s comfort and health. Aim to trim your dog’s nails every 4-6 weeks using either a guillotine clipper or a scissor-like clipper, depending on your preference. Ensure you only trim the very tip of your dog’s nails to avoid cutting into the quick, which could cause pain and bleeding.

Finally, maintaining clean ears is crucial for preventing infections in longhair Dachshunds. Clean their ears every two weeks using a dog-specific ear cleaner and cotton balls – avoid using cotton swabs as they may damage the ear canal. Gently hold the ear flap up and fill the ear with cleaner before gently massaging the base of the ear for about 30 seconds. Allow your Dachshund to shake their head to loosen any debris before wiping away the dirt with a cotton ball.

By following these three grooming tips, you’ll ensure your longhair Dachshund remains looking fabulous while also promoting their well-being and comfort. Regular grooming also strengthens the bond between you and your furry companion, making it an enjoyable activity for both of you.
