3 Ways to Get Rid of Moles in Your Lawn

Introduction

Moles might be cute with their tiny eyes and furry bodies, but they can wreak havoc on your lawn. The unsightly tunnels and dirt mounds these subterranean creatures create can mar the beauty of your outdoor spaces and damage the roots of your plants. To help you reclaim your lawn, we’ve compiled a list of three effective methods for getting rid of moles.

1. Trapping

One of the most effective ways to remove moles from your lawn is by using traps. You have several options when it comes to mole traps, but some common types are scissor traps, plunger traps, and choker loop traps. To get started, follow these steps:

a) Identify active tunnels: Look for freshly dug dirt mounds or collapsed tunnels that indicate the presence of a mole.

b) Prepare the trap: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for setting up your chosen trap.

c) Set the trap: Place the trap in an active tunnel and cover it carefully with soil or grass to avoid raising suspicion.

d) Check your traps regularly: Inspect your traps every day for any trapped moles. When you’ve caught a mole, dispose of it safely and humanely.

2. Natural Repellents

If trapping sounds too cruel or intimidating to you, opt for natural repellents as a more compassionate alternative. Various substances can naturally deter moles from inhabiting your lawn, including castor oil, garlic, coffee grounds, or hot pepper powder.

a) Castor oil – Mix 6 bounces of castor oil with 2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap in a spray bottle filled with water. Spray it on any areas where you’ve spotted mole activity. This mixture makes your garden plants unpalatable to moles.

b) Garlic – Planting garlic throughout your garden emits a strong scent that moles dislike. It can also help repel other pests, such as aphids, snails, and slugs.

c) Coffee grounds – Sprinkle used coffee grounds in the mole tunnels and around your plants. The caffeine and strong smell in the coffee grounds make them an unwelcome environment for moles.

3. Ultrasonic Repellents

Ultrasonic repellents are a high-tech solution to your mole problem. These devices emit low-frequency sounds or vibrations that irritate and disorient moles, encouraging them to stay away from your yard.

a) Invest in a quality ultrasonic repellent that is suitable for outdoor use and covers the desired area of your lawn.

b) Install the repellent in an optimal location according to the manufacturer’s instructions—a central location on your lawn might be most effective.

c) Maintain the device regularly by cleaning it and replacing batteries if necessary.

Conclusion

Getting rid of moles can be challenging, but it is crucial to protecting your lawn’s health and aesthetics. Whether you choose trapping, natural repellents, or ultrasonic devices, perseverance will be key in dealing with these stubborn creatures. By employing one or more of these methods, you can keep your yard free from mole invaders for good!
