3 Ways to Get Rid of Chipmunks

Chipmunks are adorable, small animals that often find their way into gardens and lawns. While they might be cute, chipmunks can cause damage to your property by digging holes, eating plants and flowers, and creating nests in various places. If you’re tired of finding chipmunk-related damage around your home, consider these three methods for getting rid of these pesky critters.

1. Use Humane Traps

One of the most effective and humane ways to get rid of chipmunks is by using live traps. These traps are designed to capture the animal without causing any harm. Once the chipmunk is caught, you can relocate it to a more suitable habitat away from your property. To get started, you’ll need:

– A live trap designed for small animals

– Bait, such as peanut butter or sunflower seeds

– A suitable release location at least 3-5 miles from your home

Place the bait inside the trap and set it in an area frequented by the chipmunks. Check the trap frequently and transport caught animals promptly to avoid causing undue stress.

2. Modify Their Habitat

Making your property less attractive to chipmunks is another effective method for keeping them away. Follow these steps to discourage chipmunk activity around your home:

– Clear areas of dense vegetation and remove piles of debris where chipmunks could hide.

– Seal any openings or spaces in exterior walls where chipmunks may seek shelter.

– Install fencing or barriers around gardens and flowerbeds to prevent easy access.

– Use bird feeders with catch trays or squirrel-proof designs to minimize spilled seed and discourage chipmunks from foraging.

3. Natural Repellents

There are a variety of natural repellents that can effectively deter chipmunks from visiting your property. Some popular options include:

– Predator scents: Chipmunks are prey animals, and by using scents that mimic their predators, you can create an environment that feels unsafe. Try fox or coyote urine, which is available at garden stores or online.

– Spicy scents: Create a spicy spray using cayenne pepper, water, and a few drops of dish soap. Spray this mixture around the perimeter of your property, in flower beds, and on any damaged areas to deter chipmunks.

– Epsom salt: Sprinkle Epsom salt around the edges of your garden and flower beds. Chipmunks dislike the taste, and the salt will also help nourish your plants.

Implementing these methods in combination should help reduce or eliminate chipmunk activity on your property. Remember that getting rid of chipmunks may require patience and persistence; it’s essential to be consistent in your efforts for the best results.
