3 Ways to Get Oil Out of Suede

Introduction

Suede is a popular material used for producing luxury items such as shoes, handbags, and jackets. Its soft and velvety texture makes it a fabric of choice for many fashion enthusiasts. However, it’s also quite delicate and prone to stains, especially oil-based ones. Removing oil from suede can be a daunting task, but it’s not impossible. In this article, we’ll explore three effective ways to get oil out of suede and restore your cherished item to its original beauty.

1. Using Cornstarch or Talcum Powder

One of the most common ways to remove oil stains from suede is by using cornstarch or talcum powder. Here’s how you can do it:

– Gently blot away any excess oil with a clean and dry cloth or paper towel.

– Sprinkle a generous amount of cornstarch or talcum powder over the stained area.

– Lightly press the powder into the suede with your fingers.

– Allow the powder to sit on the stain for a few hours or, ideally, overnight.

– Gently brush off the powder using a soft-bristled brush or clean cloth.

– If the stain persists, repeat these steps as necessary.

2. Steam Cleaning

If you have access to a clothes steamer or even just a steam iron, you can use steam to help remove oil stains from suede:

– Hold the steamer or steam iron about 6 inches away from the suede item.

– Blast steam onto the stained area for approximately 30 seconds to one minute, being careful not to over-wet the fabric.

– As soon as you finish steaming, gently rub away any remaining stain marks with a clean and dry cloth.

– Let the suede air-dry in an open space away from direct sunlight.

3. Dry Cleaning Solvent

If all else fails and you’re still struggling to remove the oil stain, it’s time to try a dry cleaning solvent:

– Test the solvent on a small, inconspicuous area of the suede first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.

– Apply a small amount of the solvent directly onto a clean cloth, and dab it gently over the stain.

– Blot at the stain in a lifting motion rather than rubbing to avoid spreading the stain further.

– Let the suede air-dry after treatment.

Conclusion

Suede is a luxurious and beautiful material, but it demands proper care when dealing with oil-based stains. By following these three methods—using cornstarch or talcum powder, steam cleaning, and employing a dry cleaning solvent—you can effectively remove oil stains from your suede items and keep them looking pristine. Don’t forget to always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions on your specific suede items, as some may have special care requirements.
