3 Ways to Fit Soft Ballet Shoes

As a dancer, having correctly fitted soft ballet shoes is essential for performance, comfort, and injury prevention. With the variety of shapes, materials, and sizes available, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to find the perfect pair of ballet shoes. Here are three ways to fit your soft ballet shoes to ensure optimal support and longevity.

1. Select the Right Material

Ballet shoes come in different materials like leather, canvas, and satin. Your choice should depend on the level of dancing expertise and personal preference.

– Leather: As a durable material, leather ballet shoes offer excellent support and naturally mold to your feet over time. The added traction prevents slips on the dance floor. These are ideal for beginners and intermediate dancers as they offer a good balance between support and flexibility.

– Canvas: Lightweight and more breathable than leather, canvas ballet shoes are easier to wash and ideal for practice sessions. They often have a split sole that enables greater foot flexibility, making them perfect for experienced dancers who want enhanced foot articulation.

– Satin: While not as durable as leather or canvas, satin ballet shoes showcase an elegant appearance suitable for stage performances and competitions.

2. Measure Your Feet Accurately

Proper sizing is crucial when it comes to fitting soft ballet shoes. Follow these steps to measure your feet accurately:

– Stand on a blank sheet of paper with bare feet.

– Trace each foot’s outline while keeping the pencil perpendicular to the floor.

– Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure both tracings from the longest toe to the heel.

– To find your correct size, use your longest foot measurement (rounded up if necessary) and consult a ballet shoe size chart.

Keep in mind that different brands may run smaller or larger than standard sizes; it’s worth trying on various brands before picking your ideal pair.

3. Adjust the Elastics and Drawstring

Customizing the elastics and drawstring on your ballet shoes will ensure a snug fit. Here’s how:

– Elastic bands: Check if your ballet shoes come with pre-sewn elastic bands or are separate to sew in yourself. Position the elastics in a criss-cross pattern across the arch of your foot, making sure they provide adequate support without being too tight. Sew them in if necessary.

– Drawstring: Pull the drawstring gently around the edges to tighten the shoe around your foot. Remember not to pull it too tight to avoid discomfort and circulation issues. Once adjusted, tie a knot and tuck it in away from view.

Conclusion

Finding the perfect fit for soft ballet shoes is necessary for an enjoyable and safe dancing experience. By selecting the right material for your experience level, accurately measuring your feet, and adjusting elastics and drawstrings, you will provide yourself with maximum comfort and support during every performance.
