3 Ways to Eat Marmite

Spread the love

Marmite – a dark, salty, savory spread derived from yeast extract – seems to evoke two distinct reactions among people: total adoration or complete repulsion. For those who fall in the former camp, Marmite’s strong flavor and versatility can make it an indispensable pantry staple. If you’re curious about how to incorporate this polarizing treat into your daily diet, or if you’re already a fan looking for new ideas, read on for three mouthwatering ways to eat Marmite.

1. Marmite on Toast

The classic British way to enjoy Marmite is by spreading a thin layer of it on toast. Butter up your toast first and then add a very light layer of Marmite. This simple snack is perfect for breakfast, or as an accompaniment to your afternoon tea.

If you want to elevate your toast experience, try adding sliced avocado or a poached egg on top of the Marmite-covered toast. Alternatively, sprinkle some grated cheese – such as cheddar or gouda – on the Marmite-slathered toast before popping it under the grill until the cheese melts into bubbling deliciousness.

2. Stir it into Soups and Stews

For fans of umami flavors, adding a dollop of Marmite into soup and stew recipes can take them from ordinary to delectable. Stir in a modest amount of Marmite at the beginning of cooking to create a robust flavor base that adds depth and richness.

Marmite works particularly well in vegetable-based soups and stews as it imparts a meaty-like quality without actual animal products. It is also excellent in beef stews that need that extra savory punch. Start with a small teaspoonful and work your way up according to taste preferences.

3. Marmite in Pasta Dishes

Another innovative way to enjoy Marmite is by incorporating it into pasta sauces. Mix a small amount of Marmite into a bowl of warm pasta, add olive oil or butter, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, ground black pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Toss everything together and enjoy an umami-packed bowl of Marmite pasta.

If you’re partial to tomato-based sauces, try adding a teaspoon of Marmite to your marinara or Bolognese sauce for an unexpected depth of flavor.

Conclusion

Marmite is a versatile concoction that can help elevate your culinary creations with its distinctive taste. Whether smeared on toast, stirred into soups and stews, or mixed into pasta dishes, this potent little spread will make your taste buds sing. Experiment with small amounts first to find the ideal level of Marmite’s unique savoriness in your favorite dishes. Happy eating!
