3 Ways to Dress in a Sari

A sari is a traditional, versatile Indian garment that consists of a long piece of fabric typically draped around the body. It’s a timeless fashion symbol that has been worn by women across generations. Saris come in numerous styles, colors, and patterns, which make them an ideal choice for various occasions. In this article, we will explore three ways to dress in a sari.

1. The Nivi Style

The Nivi style is one of the most popular ways to wear a sari and is widely used throughout India. It’s known for its simplicity and elegance.

– Begin by wearing a fitted petticoat and a matching blouse.

– Tuck one end of the sari (the plain end) into the petticoat at the waist, ensuring that the lower end falls at your ankle level.

– Wrap the sari around your waist and tuck it again near your navel.

– Now take the other end (known as pallu) and drape it across your left shoulder.

– Gather the pleats creating an accordion-style fold, ensuring they’re equal in width before tucking them into the waistband.

2. The Gujarati Style

Also known as the Seedha Pallu style, this method of draping is popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan. This style is perfect for showcasing elaborate designs on the pallu.

– Start by following the initial steps of the Nivi style, but when taking the pallu over your shoulder, bring it over your right shoulder instead of your left.

– Pull it across your chest from right to left diagonally while adjusting its length so it reaches just above your knee.

– Tuck any extra fabric at your left hip to ensure a clean drape.

– Pleat any remaining fabric neatly and tuck them into the waistband at your front-left side.

3. The Bengali Style

The Bengali style sari is characterized by its unique way of draping to add distinctiveness and grace. This style is commonly worn during festivals like Durga Puja.

– Begin by wearing a petticoat and blouse.

– Tuck the plain end into your petticoat, wrap it around your waist, and tuck it again near your navel just like in the Nivi style.

– Next, drape the pallu, pleated twice from each side, over your left shoulder.

– After that, pull one end of the pallu across your chest to your right shoulder and pin it in place.

– Finally, hold the other end of the pallu with your left hand and wrap it under your arm while creating bunches. Use a gorgeous keyring to fasten both trailing ends.

These are just three ways to dress in a sari that can help you display your cultural roots with elegance and style. Saris are adaptable and can be worn for various events, from formal gatherings to casual parties. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and designs to find the perfect sari look for any occasion.
