3 Ways to Double Kick Fast on Drums

Introduction:

Double kicking, also known as double bass drumming, is a technique used by drummers to achieve rapid and powerful beats. This skill can add an exciting dimension to your playing and make your drumming stand out. Here are three methods that will help you increase your double kick speed on drums.

Method 1: Practice with a metronome

One of the most effective ways to improve your double kick speed is by practicing with a metronome. A metronome helps you maintain a consistent tempo and gradually increase your speed.

1. Set the metronome at a comfortable tempo where you can play double kicks consistently.

2. As you become more comfortable, gradually increase the metronome’s speed.

3. Keep practicing at faster tempos until you reach your desired double kick speed.

Method 2: Strengthen your leg muscles

Strong leg muscles are essential for fast double kicking. Exercises like jogging, cycling, or strength training can help improve muscle endurance in your legs and lead to quicker double kicking.

1. Engage in regular cardiovascular exercises to improve endurance and overall leg strength.

2. Incorporate weightlifting exercises, such as squats and lunges, into your fitness routine.

3. Stretch regularly to maintain flexibility and prevent injury during high-speed drumming.

Method 3: Develop foot technique

Foot technique plays a significant role in achieving fast double kicks on drums. Two popular methods include the heel-up and heel-down techniques:

Heel-Up Technique:

1. Sit on the drum throne with your feet on the pedals and heels raised slightly off the ground.

2. Use ankle motion to strike the pedal while keeping your heels elevated throughout the entire movement.

Heel-Down Technique:

1. Keep both feet flat on the pedals while seated on the drum throne.

2. Strike the pedal using ankle movement, keeping your heels and entire foot in contact with the pedal.

Experiment with both techniques to see which one works best for you, and focus on practicing the chosen method to increase speed.

Conclusion:

Mastering the double kick technique can make a significant impact on your drumming skills. By consistently practicing with a metronome, building leg strength, and developing efficient foot techniques, you’ll be on your way to doubling your kick speed in no time. Keep pushing yourself and don’t get discouraged; like any skill, it takes time and practice to perfect.
