Introduction:

Originating from the Dominican Republic, the Merengue is a lively and simple dance that has become popular across the world. The dance is known for its catchy rhythm and fun, energy-filled moves. Beginners, as well as experienced dancers, can easily enjoy the Merengue on the dance floor. In this article, we will explore 3 different ways to do the Merengue, allowing you to showcase your moves and dance your way to a fantastic time!

1. Basic Merengue Steps:

The most straightforward method of dancing Merengue involves mastering some basic steps. These simple moves serve as the foundation for more advanced routines later on.

a) Start by positioning yourself with your feet close together.

b) Bend your knees slightly, keeping a relaxed posture.

c) Choose one foot and step on every beat of the music (one count), then shift weight onto that foot. Alternate between your left and right foot in time with the music.

d) While moving your feet, rotate your hips naturally; this gives the dance its distinctive hip action.

e) Don’t forget to move your arms! Bend them slightly around chest height and maintain a natural sway.

2. Partner Dancing:

Merengue is traditionally a partner dance. To enjoy partner dancing, you must learn how to do basic Merengue steps while maintaining connection with your partner.

a) Take up a partner position, with the leader’s left hand holding the follower’s right hand, while their right arm is draped around their partner’s waist reaching for their shoulder blade or upper back. The follower’s left arm should rest on top of their partner’s arm.

b) Begin moving to the music using the basic steps outlined earlier.

c) Leaders can guide followers into various simple turns by gently leading with their hands.

d) Feel free to add style with some subtle hip and shoulder movements.

3. Advanced Moves and Variations:

Once you have mastered the basic steps and partner dance, you can experiment with more complex moves and variations to spice up your Merengue dancing.

a) Incorporate spins or twirls by adding momentum to the basic steps; these maneuvers can be done solo or with a partner.

b) Combine elements from other popular dance styles, such as Bachata or Salsa, to create a unique hybrid routine.

c) Add dips, lifts, and fancy footwork to demonstrate your dancing prowess and elevate your Merengue game.

Conclusion:

The Merengue is an enjoyable dance that can be easily picked up by anyone who’s willing to learn. Whether you’re trying basic steps, partner dancing, or experimenting with advanced moves and variations, you’ll find yourself immersed in the vibrant world of Merengue. So grab your dancing shoes and hit the floor with confidence – it’s time to join the fun!
