3 Ways to Cut Vinyl Plank Flooring

Introduction:

Vinyl plank flooring is a popular and versatile choice for both residential and commercial spaces due to its water resistance, durability, and realistic appearance. However, proper installation requires accurate cutting to achieve the desired fit and finish. In this article, we will explore three different methods for cutting vinyl plank flooring to ensure a seamless and professional-looking result.

1. Using a Utility Knife

A utility knife is an effective tool for making straight cuts in vinyl plank flooring. This method is best for thinner planks.

Step-by-step process:

– Start by measuring the area where the vinyl plank will be installed and mark the cutting line on the surface of the plank with a straight edge and pencil.

– Run the blade of the utility knife along the marked line, applying firm pressure to score the surface of the plank.

– After scoring, bend the plank away from you to create a sharp, clean break along the scored line.

– If any rough edges remain, use sandpaper or a fine file to smooth them out.

2. Using a Vinyl Cutter or Flooring Cutter

Vinyl cutters, also known as flooring cutters, are designed specifically for cutting vinyl floorings such as LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) and LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile).

Step-by-step process:

– Place your vinyl plank on a stable work surface or use a workbench designed for flooring cutters.

– Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on adjusting the cutter’s gauges to match your specific plank thickness.

– Measure and mark your planks using the same method as described in step one.

– Carefully align your marked line with the blade of your vinyl cutter or flooring cutter.

– Apply firm pressure on the cutter’s handle to make a clean, precise cut through the vinyl plank.

3. Using Power Tools: Circular Saw or Jigsaw

Power tools are useful when you need to make multiple cuts, tight or angled cuts. A circular saw or jigsaw fitted with a fine-toothed blade is ideal for this purpose.

Step-by-step process:

– When working with power tools, always ensure you wear proper safety equipment, such as goggles and ear protection.

– Measure and mark your planks as described earlier.

– Clamp the plank securely to your work surface to avoid movement during cutting.

– For straight cuts, use a circular saw with a straight edge as a guide. For curved or more complex cuts, opt for a jigsaw.

– Carefully follow your marked line with the power tool’s blade, ensuring a steady hand for an accurate cut.

Conclusion:

Choosing the right method for cutting vinyl plank flooring depends on the specific project requirements and your level of experience. Utility knives are perfect for straight cuts and thinner planks, while vinyl cutters provide precision and ease of use. Power tools like circular saws and jigsaws are best suited for complex cuts and larger projects. Regardless of the method you choose, always remember to measure accurately, use appropriate safety precautions, and practice on scrap pieces before tackling your primary flooring project.
