Introduction

Flower arrangements are a beautiful way to brighten up any space, and properly cutting flowers can help maintain their longevity. Cutting flowers in the right way ensures that they remain vibrant and fresh longer and also enhances their absorption of water and nutrients. In this article, we explore three methods to cut flowers like a pro that will allow your floral displays to stay stunning for days.

Method 1: Cutting Underwater

Cutting flowers underwater is one of the most effective ways to eliminate air bubbles from entering the stems, maximizing water uptake. Air bubbles can block the flow of water into the stem and cause them to wilt.

1. Fill a bucket or bowl with clean, room temperature water.

2. Hold the flower stem submerged in the water while cutting at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or pruning shears.

3. Immediately transfer the cut flowers into a vase filled with fresh water and flower food.

Method 2: Cutting with Hot Water

Using hot water on freshly cut flowers helps them take up more water, stimulating hydration. This method is especially useful for flowers with woody stems such as roses.

1. Boil a small pot of water.

2. Pour boiling water into a heat-resistant container.

3. Hold the flower stems over the container and use sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut them at a 45-degree angle.

4. Immediately place the cut stems into the hot water for approximately 30 seconds.

5. Transfer the prepared stems to a vase filled with cool fresh water and flower food.

Method 3: Crushing Flower Stems

Crushing flower stems slightly increases their surface area, ultimately improving their ability to absorb water and nutrients.

1. Hold the flower stem firmly near its base with one hand.

2. Using blunt-nosed pliers or light hammer, gently crush the bottom inch or two of the stem.

3. Cut the crushed section at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or pruning shears.

4. Place the cut flowers in a vase filled with fresh water and flower food.

Conclusion

Understanding how to cut flowers properly can significantly increase their longevity and maintain their aesthetics. Cutting underwater, using hot water, and crushing stems are three simple but effective methods for ensuring your floral arrangements stay vibrant for days. Try these methods next time you create a beautiful bouquet or centerpiece to keep your flowers lasting longer and maintain their freshness.
