3 Ways to Cover Wood Paneling

Introduction

Wood paneling was once a popular trend in interior design, particularly in the 1970s and 80s. However, today many homeowners find the outdated appearance of wood paneling less than desirable. If you have wood paneling in your home and want to update its look, here are three ways to cover wood paneling and give it a fresh new appearance.

1. Paint the Wood Paneling

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to cover wood paneling is by painting it. This process involves several steps, including cleaning, sanding, priming, and painting. Each step is crucial to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish.

Begin by cleaning the surface of your wood paneling with a mild soap solution, and then apply sandpaper to remove any rough spots or glossy finish from the panels. Cover every inch of the paneling with primer designed for wood surfaces, allowing it to dry thoroughly. Finally, apply at least two coats of paint in your desired color using a roller or brush for even coverage.

2. Install Drywall Over the Wood Paneling

Another effective way to cover wood paneling is by installing drywall over it. This method hides the panels completely while providing a smooth surface for painting or wallpaper application. To install drywall over your existing panels, follow these steps:

– Measure and cut drywall sheets to fit your walls.

– Apply adhesive on the back of drywall sheets or on the wooden panels.

– Attach each sheet to the wood panels using screws spaced evenly apart.

– Fill any gaps between sheets with joint compound and allow it to dry.

– Sand down any rough edges or excess compounds until smooth.

– Apply a primer on top of the drywall before painting or applying wallpaper.

3. Utilize Peel-and-Stick Wall Tiles or Wallpaper

Using peel-and-stick wall tiles or wallpaper offers another way to cover wood paneling without the need for painting or heavy construction. These products come in various styles and designs, making it easy to find a pattern that matches your decor. They can offer a temporary or semi-permanent change to your space.

For peel-and-stick wall tiles, measure the area you’d like to cover and choose tiles that work well with your design scheme. Clean your wood panel walls with soap and water, then follow manufacturer instructions on properly applying the tiles.

If you prefer wallpaper, measure your walls, cut the paper into appropriate sections, and clean your paneling before applying adhesive. Carefully apply the wallpaper to the panels, smoothing out any air bubbles as you go.

Conclusion

Updating the look of wood paneling doesn’t need to be a daunting task. With these three methods – painting, installing drywall over existing panels, or utilizing peel-and-stick wall tiles or wallpaper – you can breathe new life into outdated spaces without breaking the bank. Choose the best option that suits both your budget and needs, then enjoy your refreshed and modern-looking interior!
