3 Ways to Clean Teflon

Teflon, a popular non-stick coating for cookware, offers convenience in the kitchen by allowing food to slide effortlessly onto plates without using excess oil or butter. However, improper cleaning can degrade this coating, which compromises its non-stick quality and can even pose health risks. Preserve the performance and lifespan of your Teflon cookware by following these three gentle cleaning methods.

1. Hand-Washing with Mild Detergent

One of the best ways to clean Teflon-coated cookware is by hand-washing with warm water and mild dish soap. To begin, let the cookware cool down after cooking, as sudden temperature changes can warp and damage the coating. Once cooled, fill your sink or basin with warm water, adding a few drops of a mild dishwashing detergent.

Immerse your Teflon cookware into the soapy water and use a soft sponge or cloth to gently clean away any food residues or stains. Avoid using abrasive scrubbers like steel wool or rough brushes, as these can scratch and damage the Teflon surface. After cleaning, rinse the cookware thoroughly with warm water to remove any soap residue before drying it with a soft towel.

2. Baking Soda for Stubborn Stains

For tougher stains that refuse to budge using only mild detergent, baking soda serves as a gentle abrasive that won’t harm your Teflon coating. To use this method, mix equal parts baking soda and water to form a paste-like consistency. Apply this mixture onto the affected area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

Next, use a soft sponge or cloth to gently scrub away the stain in circular motions. Baking soda’s gentle abrasion should loosen the stain without damaging your Teflon surface. Rinse the cookware with warm water, washing it with mild dish soap as needed, before drying it with a clean towel.

3. Vinegar Solution for Burnt-on Residues

When faced with burnt-on residues or discoloration that doesn’t go away using the previous methods, try using a white vinegar solution. In a well-ventilated area, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in the cookware you want to clean, filling it up about halfway. Place the cookware over low heat on your stove and let the solution simmer for 10-15 minutes.

During simmering, the acids in the vinegar will help loosen any stubborn residues and stains. Once finished, remove your cookware from heat and let it cool before emptying the vinegar solution. Wash the cookware in warm soapy water with a soft sponge or cloth, then rinse and dry it with a clean towel.

In conclusion, knowing how to properly clean your Teflon cookware is essential to maintaining its non-stick performance and prolonging its lifespan. Employ these gentle cleaning techniques to keep your Teflon surfaces in top shape – and enjoy stress-free cooking in your kitchen.
