3 Ways to Become a Teacher in Australia

Teaching is a rewarding career that allows you to help cultivate the young minds that will become the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. If you’re considering pursuing a career in teaching, Australia offers various pathways to achieve your goal. This article will explore three ways to become a teacher in Australia.

1.Complete an Undergraduate Teaching Degree

One of the most common pathways into teaching is pursuing an undergraduate degree in education. This degree typically takes four years to complete, although some universities may offer accelerated programs to finish earlier. Throughout the course, you will learn essential theories and methodologies to become an effective teacher. Subjects can include child development, curriculum design, and assessment strategies.

During your degree, you will also undertake practical placements at schools to gain hands-on experience in teaching under supervision. Upon successful completion of the program, you will be eligible for registration with the relevant state-based teacher registration board.

Some examples of undergraduate teaching degrees include:

– Bachelor of Education (Primary)

– Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

– Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)

2.Postgraduate Teaching Degree

For those who have previously completed a non-teaching bachelor’s degree, another pathway to becoming a teacher involves pursuing a postgraduate qualification like a Master of Teaching or Graduate Diploma in Education. A postgraduate teaching qualification builds upon your existing knowledge by focusing on transforming your past academic study into effective teaching strategies.

These programs usually take between one to two years full-time or up to four years part-time and also involve practical placements. Upon completion, you will be eligible for registration with the relevant state-based teacher registration board.

3.Alternative Pathways – Teach for Australia Program

Apart from formal university qualifications, an alternative pathway into teaching is available through specific programs like Teach for Australia (TFA). TFA is designed for high-achieving graduates from various academic disciplines who want to contribute positively towards disadvantaged communities and make a difference in children’s lives.

This two-year program combines intensive teacher training, a full-time teaching role in an under-resourced school, and ongoing support. Participants also work towards a Master of Teaching degree through university coursework. At the end of the program, graduates receive a teaching qualification that enables them to work as teachers in schools across Australia.

In conclusion, there are multiple pathways available to become a teacher in Australia, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching degrees and alternative programs like Teach for Australia. Each journey offers its unique experiences, but all ultimately lead you towards an enriching career in education.
