3 Simple Ways to Thicken Potato Soup

Introduction:

Potato soup is a classic comfort food that many people love, especially during colder months. While some prefer their potato soup to be thin, others enjoy a thicker consistency that clings to their spoon and warms their belly as it goes down. If you belong to the latter category, look no further. Here are three simple methods to help you achieve your desired thickness for the perfect bowl of hearty potato soup.

1. Use a Roux:

A roux is a combination of flour and fat (usually butter) that has been cooked together before being added to soups and sauces for thickening purposes. To make a roux for your potato soup, follow these simple steps:

– Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

– Gradually whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour.

– Continuously whisk the mixture until it becomes smooth and has turned a light golden color, approximately 3-4 minutes.

– Gradually add your prepared roux to the potato soup, while stirring constantly, until the desired thickness is achieved.

2. Use Cornstarch:Cornstarch is another effective option for thickening soups and can also be used in gluten-free cooking. To thicken your potato soup using cornstarch, simply follow these steps:

– In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with an equal amount of cold water, whisking until smooth.

– Slowly pour this mixture into your simmering potato soup while stirring continuously.

– Allow the soup to continue simmering for an additional 3-5 minutes or until it reaches your desired level of thickness.

3. Blend Some Potatoes:

Using potatoes themselves as a natural thickener is not only easy but also adds more depth and flavor to your soup. Here’s how:

– Remove approximately one-third of the cooked potatoes from your soup and set them aside.

– Either use an immersion blender or transfer the remaining soup to a countertop blender, and blend until smooth.

– Return the reserved potatoes to the blended soup and mix well. You can also mash the reserved potatoes before adding them back if you prefer a less chunky texture.

– If you need more thickness, simply repeat this process with more potatoes.

Conclusion:

With these three simple methods, you can easily thicken your potato soup to achieve the perfect consistency. Feel free to experiment with these techniques or combine them to create a rich and hearty soup that will leave your taste buds craving for more.
