A Foley catheter is an essential medical device often used to help patients who are unable to urinate due to various medical conditions. It is vital that proper care of the catheter is maintained, including regular irrigation to ensure its functionality and avoid complications. In this article, we will discuss the complete process of irrigating a Foley catheter step by step.

1. Preparation

Before starting the irrigation process, gather all necessary items:

– Sterile gloves

– Saline solution or prescribed irrigation solution

– Syringe (usually 30-60 mL)

– Waste container

– Clean towel or underpad

– Soap and water (if needed)

Ensure that the environment where you will be irrigating the Foley catheter is clean and sanitized.

2. Hand hygiene

Wash your hands thoroughly using soap and water according to your hospital’s hand-washing guidelines. This is necessary to prevent the introduction of harmful bacteria or pathogens into the patient’s urinary system.

3. Put on sterile gloves

After ensuring that your hands are clean, put on a pair of sterile gloves. Remember not to touch anything with your gloved hands except for the necessary items required for catheter irrigation.

4. Position the patient

Arrange the patient in a comfortable position and place a clean towel or underpad beneath the catheter site. This will help catch any spillage from the irrigation process.

5. Disconnecting and cleaning

Carefully disconnect the tubing connecting the catheter to the drainage bag, taking care not to tug on the catheter itself.
Using alcohol pads or soap and water, gently clean around the catheter site.

6. Preparing for irrigation

Draw up approximately 30-60 mL of saline solution or prescribed irrigation liquid in a sterile syringe. Make sure there are no air bubbles left in the syringe. Keep track of how much solution you are using.

7. Irrigating the Foley catheter

Gently insert the tip of the syringe into the open end of the catheter tubing. Inject the solution into the tubing slowly, taking approximately 30 seconds to fully administer the fluid. Wait a few seconds for the solution to make its way up and down the catheter, loosening any debris or blockages.

8. Drainage

After waiting for a sufficient amount of time, remove the syringe and hold the open end of the tubing over a waste container. Allow gravity to guide the fluid and any debris out of the catheter and into the container.

9. Reconnecting and assessment

Once drainage is complete, carefully reconnect the catheter tubing to its drainage bag. Assess if irrigating has resolved any issues experienced by the patient (i.e., difficulty urinating).

10. Clean up and documentation

Remove gloves, dispose of any waste properly, and perform hand hygiene once again after completing the procedure.
Document your actions in patients medical records, including how much satisfaction was used and any other pertinent information regarding success or complications from irrigation.

Routine irrigation of a Foley catheter, in addition to daily care, is essential for maintaining patient comfort and preventing infections and blockages. Following this step-by-step guide will ensure that you can safely and effectively irrigate a Foley catheter.
