Peas might not be the first vegetable that comes to mind when you think of exciting culinary adventures, but these versatile little gems offer a wealth of flavor possibilities with just a few simple seasonings. Whether you’re working with fresh, frozen, or canned peas, here are three easy ways to perk up this classic side dish and give it the attention it deserves.

1. Lemon and Herb Seasoning

Amp up the natural brightness of peas by adding a hint of citrus and herbal notes. This simple combination works well with both fresh and frozen peas. To create this dish, you’ll need:

– 2 cups of peas

– Zest of 1 lemon

– 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook peas according to package instructions or until tender.
  2. Once cooked, drain any excess water and return peas to their cooking pan or a serving bowl.
  3. Add lemon zest and chopped parsley to the peas.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Toss gently to evenly distribute seasoning before serving.

2. Peas with Garlic Butter

Garlic butter adds a rich depth of flavor that pairs beautifully with the sweetness of peas. For this recipe, you can use canned or frozen peas for an even quicker side dish option.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups of peas

– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

– 2 cloves garlic, minced

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook peas according to package instructions or until tender.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter.
  3. When butter is melted, add minced garlic and cook for about one minute or until fragrant but not browned.
  4. Drain cooked peas if necessary and return them to their cooking pan or place in a serving bowl.
  5. Pour garlic butter over the peas and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Mix gently to ensure even coverage of seasoning before serving.

3. Pesto Peas

For a unique twist, toss cooked peas in pesto for a burst of fresh flavor that’s suitable for both hot and cold dishes. Use your favorite store-bought pesto or make your own from scratch.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups of peas

– 2 tablespoons pesto

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook peas according to package instructions or until tender.
  2. Drain cooked peas if necessary and return them to their cooking pan or place in a serving bowl.
  3. Add pesto to the peas, stirring gently to coat evenly.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Mix gently before serving, ensuring that all the peas are evenly coated in pesto.

By incorporating these three simple seasoning methods into your culinary repertoire, you’ll be able to breathe new life into the humble pea and transform it into a delectable superstar side dish.
