3 Simple Ways to Bypass a Water Softener

Introduction

Water softeners play a vital role when it comes to removing hard minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, from your home’s water supply. These minerals can lead to issues like scale buildup in pipes and appliances, which can ultimately shorten their life expectancy and cause inefficiencies. However, there are times when you might want to bypass your water softener for various reasons – perhaps you want to water your plants with untreated water or you need unsoftened water for a specific purpose. In these cases, having the ability to bypass your water softener temporarily is essential. Here are three simple ways you can accomplish this.

1. Use the built-in bypass valve

Most modern water softeners come with a built-in bypass valve, which makes them easy to turn off temporarily. The bypass valve usually consists of three valves: two on the incoming and outgoing lines that connect the softener to your home’s plumbing system and one on the main line that connects both sides.

To execute this method, follow these steps:

a. Locate the bypass valve on your water softener.

b. Close the two valves on the incoming and outgoing lines.

c. Open the valve on the main line connecting both sides.

Once all valves have been adjusted correctly, water will flow past the softener unit instead of going through it.

2. Install a separate bypass line

If your water softener doesn’t come with a built-in bypass valve, or if those valves have failed, you could install a separate bypass line instead. To do this, you will need some T-fittings and shut-off valves that match your existing plumbing system.

Follow these steps to create an external bypass line:

a. Turn off your home’s main water supply.

b. Disconnect the incoming and outgoing lines from the softener unit.

c. Attach T-fittings to both ends of these lines.

d. Install a new line connecting the two T-fittings, with shut-off valves on both ends of the line.

e. Reconnect the softener unit to the plumbing system.

Now, you can bypass the softener simply by closing the valves leading to it and opening the valves on the bypass line instead.

3. Use a portable water filter

Another option to bypass your water softener is to use a portable water filter. This solution is ideal for those who want to connect a garden hose directly to their outdoor water source without interfering with their home’s plumbing system.

To execute this method:

a. Purchase a portable water filter that’s designed for outdoor use.

b. Attach it to your outdoor spigot, followed by your garden hose.

c. Turn on the water, and it will flow through the filter before reaching your hose, skipping the softener process entirely.

Conclusion

Bypassing a water softener can be accomplished in several ways, depending on your specific needs and preferences. Whether you use the built-in bypass valve, install an external bypass line, or utilize a portable water filter, these methods will provide you with unsoftened water when necessary without disrupting your home’s overall water treatment system.
