2025 Mazda CX-70: Bridging the Gap in Mazda’s SUV Lineup

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is set to fill an important niche in Mazda’s expanding SUV lineup, positioned between the compact CX-50 and the three-row CX-90. This new addition reflects Mazda’s strategy to offer a diverse range of vehicles catering to different customer needs while maintaining the brand’s reputation for stylish design and engaging driving dynamics.

Design and Exterior

The CX-70 is expected to share many design cues with its larger sibling, the CX-90, adhering to Mazda’s “Kodo” design philosophy. This approach emphasizes clean lines, subtle curves, and a sense of motion even when the vehicle is stationary. Key design elements are likely to include:

  • A prominent front grille with a refined mesh pattern
  • Sleek, adaptive LED headlights
  • A long hood and cab-rearward proportions for a sporty stance
  • Sculpted body sides with minimal character lines
  • Dual exhaust outlets and a roof spoiler for a performance-oriented look

While sharing a platform with the CX-90, the CX-70 is expected to have a sportier, more coupe-like roofline, sacrificing some cargo space for a more dynamic appearance. This design choice positions the CX-70 as a stylish alternative for buyers who prioritize aesthetics over maximum utility.

Interior and Technology

Mazda has been pushing upmarket in recent years, and the CX-70’s interior is expected to continue this trend. Anticipated features include:

  • High-quality materials throughout, including real wood trim and Nappa leather upholstery in higher trims
  • A driver-focused cockpit design with an emphasis on ergonomics
  • A large, centrally-mounted infotainment display with both touch and rotary dial controls
  • A fully digital instrument cluster with customizable displays
  • Advanced driver assistance systems, including Mazda’s i-Activsense safety suite

The CX-70 will likely offer two rows of seating, with ample space for five passengers. The rear seats are expected to be slightly more spacious than those in the CX-50, catering to families who need more room but don’t require a third row.

Powertrain Options

Mazda is expected to offer multiple powertrain options for the CX-70, catering to different performance needs and regional preferences:

  1. 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four: This engine, already used in other Mazda models, could serve as the base powertrain, offering around 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.
  2. 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six: Introduced in the CX-90, this smooth and powerful engine could be offered in the CX-70, potentially producing up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
  3. Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): Following Mazda’s commitment to electrification, a PHEV variant is likely, possibly using a system similar to the one in the CX-90 PHEV, which combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor.
