2024 Oscar predictions: Best Actress dark horses

With the Oscars on the horizon, film enthusiasts and critiques alike buzz with predictions and theories. When it comes to the Best Actress category, there are always a few shoo-ins based on blockbuster films or performances hailed by earlier awards. However, the truly intriguing aspect of Oscar predictions lies in identifying the dark horses – those marvelously talented actresses who, due to subtler roles or films with less widespread acclaim, sneak up on the competition.

For 2024, let’s explore potential dark horses who might surprise us on Hollywood’s biggest night:

First on the list is Aisha Thomas for her stunning performance in “The Silence Within.” A relatively new face in Hollywood, Thomas portrays a mute woman struggling to navigate a world steeped in sound. Critics have praised her ability to express deep emotion without uttering a single word, which could captivate voters looking for unique talent.

Another possible contender is Clara Zhou for her role in the indie gem “Waves of Change.” Zhou plays an immigrant mother facing societal and personal turmoil as she tries to provide for her family during challenging times. Her raw and gripping portrayal could garner attention from Academy members appreciating nuanced storytelling.

Don’t overlook veteran actress Elaine Rodriguez in “The Last Color.” While not initially a mainstream favorite, Rodriguez’s layered performance as an artist grappling with the onset of blindness has been quietly earning accolades. This sensitive depiction of disability may resonate strongly within different branches of the Academy.

Lastly, keep an eye on Samantha Leigh in “Whispers of the Past,” where she takes on a dual role that showcases her versatility. Portraying twin sisters with opposing lives—one as a high-profile lawyer, another living off-the-grid—Leigh’s transformation has startled audiences and could earn her a surprise nod.

Though these actresses may not yet be at the forefront of award season chatter, their profound performances stand as testament to their talents. As history shows us with past ceremonies, it’s never wise to count out the dark horse—who might just overtake the frontrunners when the Oscars roll around
