2023Mini Cooper SE First Drive: Cheap And Cheerful, But A Short-Range Fighter

The 2023 Mini Cooper SE is the electric vehicle for those who value style, fun, and affordability but aren’t too concerned about a long driving range. Combining the iconic Mini exterior with electric powertrain technology, the SE aims to provide a zippy, eco-friendly driving experience without breaking the bank.

Design and Style

True to its Mini legacy, the 2023 Mini Cooper SE retains its classic bulldog-like appearance, complete with contrasting roof and mirror caps. The signature round headlights and hexagonal grille design are backed by unique “Electric Collection” styling, including eye-catching yellow accents on the grille and mirror caps. Inside, you’ll find a mix of digital and analog instruments and a modern infotainment system fitted within MINI’s signature circular center cluster.

Performance and Handling

With an electric motor producing 181 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, the front-wheel-drive Cooper SE can reach 0-60 mph in just 7.3 seconds. The lower center of gravity due to battery placement coupled with sport-tuned suspensions gives it the agile handling MINI enthusiasts enjoy. This translates into effortless carves through twisty roads and responsive steering in tight city traffic, fulfilling the fun-to-drive promise that Minis are known for.

Battery and Charging

The 2023 Mini Cooper SE comes equipped with a 32.6 kWh battery pack (28.9 kWh usable capacity), which provides an estimated EPA range of around 114 miles on a single charge. While this may be a deal-breaker for some, others may find it sufficient for daily commutes and errand runs, particularly in urban environments.

As for charging options, you can use Level 1 or Level 2 chargers at home or commercial charging stations. With a Level 2 charger (240 volts), expect a full charge in around 4-4.5 hours. The SE is also capable of using DC fast-charging, allowing you to recharge the battery from 0% to 80% in about 36 minutes at public charging stations.

Pricing and Warranty

Starting at just $29,900 (before eligible federal and state tax credits), the 2023 Mini Cooper SE is one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market. Considering its style, personality, and performance credentials, this price point makes the SE an attractive option for those looking to dip their toes into electric mobility.

MINI offers an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty and a standard 4-year/50,000-mile limited vehicle warranty. The combination of these warranties should provide peace of mind for potential buyers.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 Mini Cooper SE may not have the longest electric range among its competitors but offers plenty of charm and driving fun at a budget-friendly price point. For the urban explorer or style-conscious commuter who doesn’t require extensive range capabilities, this short-range fighter could be the perfect entry into the world of electric vehicles.
