In today’s digital age, maintaining security, both online and offline, is crucial for a safer environment. Here are 15 ways you can improve your security practices:

1. Use strong, unique passwords: Choose complex passwords that combine letters, numbers, and symbols and change them regularly to prevent unauthorized access to your accounts.

2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a secondary confirmation after entering your password.

3. Keep software up-to-date: Regularly update your operating system, applications, and antivirus software to protect against the latest security threats.

4. Be cautious with public Wi-Fi: Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities or use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt your connection.

5. Secure your home network: Change the default login credentials on your router, update its firmware, and enable WPA3 encryption for your wireless connections.

6. Protect your devices: Use security features such as biometric data (fingerprint or facial recognition), PINs, or passwords on smartphones and computers.

7. Regularly back up important data: Save important files in at least two different locations (external hard drive/USB and cloud storage), ensuring you have backup copies if anything goes wrong.

8. Be cautious with emails and attachments: Don’t open phishing emails as they can contain malware. Double-check the sender’s address before clicking on any links or downloading attachments.

9. Watch out for suspicious calls or texts: Don’t share sensitive information over phone calls or messages from unknown sources.

10. Use anti-malware software: Install reputable anti-malware programs on all of your devices to detect potential threats in real-time.

11. Lock down social media accounts: Limit who can view your information by adjusting privacy settings and be selective with friend requests.

12. Be cautious when downloading apps: Only download apps from trusted sources like the App Store or Google Play, and check reviews before installing.

13. Safeguard your physical documents: Shred sensitive documents to protect yourself from identity theft and store important papers in a secure location, like a safe deposit box.

14. Protect against data breaches: Regularly monitor your online accounts for any suspicious activity, and use password managers to maintain strong, unique passwords for each account.

15. Educate yourself about cybersecurity: Stay informed on the latest security trends, news, and best practices to keep yourself aware of potential risks and strategies to stay secure.

By following these 15 security practices, you can greatly reduce the risk of cyberattacks or identity theft while ensuring that both your digital and personal life remain safe.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
