Travel enthusiasts often seek novel experiences and breathtaking vistas, and what better way to indulge in the charm of a region than through the leisurely pace of a train ride? The East Coast of the United States boasts some of the most picturesque railway routes, offering passengers a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of this diverse landscape. From rugged coastlines and rolling mountains to historic towns and verdant valleys, each of these scenic train rides presents an unparalleled visual feast.

1. Cape Cod Central Railroad – Departing from Hyannis, Massachusetts, this journey takes you past quaint villages, cranberry bogs, and dune-backed beaches. With the salt-tinged breeze coming off Cape Cod Bay, it’s an experience that embodies New England charm.

2. Amtrak’s Downeaster – Running between Boston, Massachusetts, and Brunswick, Maine, this route offers expansive views of the rugged northeastern seaboard. Passing through charming small towns and offering glimpses of lighthouses peeping above rocky shores, travelers are treated to quintessential Maine landscapes.

3. Adirondack Scenic Railroad – Experience New York’s wilderness aboard this train that meanders through the Adirondack Mountains. From sparkling lakes to forested paths where wildlife roam free, it’s a journey into the heart of nature.

4. Mount Washington Cog Railway – Ascend the highest peak in the Northeast on this unique railway in New Hampshire. As you climb Mount Washington, each turn unveils panoramic views that stretch out over miles of mountains and valleys.

5. Cass Scenic Railroad – West Virginia’s mountains come alive on this historic steam train ride that huffs and puffs up to Bald Knob summit. Enjoy majestic overlooks that reveal the dense forests and wide-open skies of Appalachia.

6. Auto Train (Amtrak) – While not your typical scenic route as it transports vehicles between Virginia and Florida along with their owners, its runs along the East Coast offer glimpses into rural scenes and landscapes otherwise missed when driving on the highway.

7. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad – Set out from North Carolina for a voyage into America’s most visited national park. Majestic rivers, mountain vistas, and historic tunnels all feature on this journey through Southern Appalachia.

8. Strasburg Rail Road – Pennsylvania’s Amish country unfurls from the windows of America’s oldest operating railroad. Rolling hills dotted with farms and horse-drawn carriages underline an experience steeped in tradition.

9. Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad – Known for sightings of bald eagles along its path through West Virginia’s Trough section of South Branch Valley; this train offers both natural beauty and opportunities for wildlife encounters.

10. Coastal Classic Train (Alaska Railroad) – Venturing slightly outside of what is traditionally considered ‘East Coast’, but too stunning not to mention is this Alaskan jaunt from Anchorage to Seward, laden with glaciers, mountains capes, and coastal panoramas that redefine scenic travels.

With each route offering something unique against the tapestry that is the East Coast wilderness and history—seasoned travellers or those looking for respite from bustling city lives can find solace in these journeys across some of America’s best landscapes as seen from a railroad carriage.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
