Horror movies have long used the theme of womanhood as a central element, exploring the fears, anxieties, and societal expectations that women face. Here is a list of ten horror films that delve into the complex facets of womanhood.

1. “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968)

This classic horror flick directed by Roman Polanski centers around Rosemary Woodhouse, a pregnant woman who becomes increasingly paranoid about the safety of her unborn child. The film explores themes of maternal fear and the invasion of bodily autonomy.

2. “Carrie” (1976)

Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel tells the story of a sheltered high school girl with telekinetic powers. The film delves into puberty, menstruation, and the monstrous transformation that comes with sexual awakening.

3. “The Babadook” (2014)

Jennifer Kent’s psychological horror presents a widow struggling with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in their house. It touches on themes of grief, motherhood, and mental illness.

4. “Hereditary” (2018)

Ari Aster’s directorial debut focuses on family trauma and inherited mental illness. The film showcases how grief and loss can manifest in terrifying ways and affect maternal figures.

5. “The Witch” (2015)

Set in 1630s New England, Robert Eggers’ directorial debut tells the story of a young woman’s descent into witchcraft as she confronts puritanical oppression and her sexual awakening.

6. “Aliens” (1986)

James Cameron’s sci-fi horror sequel features Ellen Ripley as she battles xenomorphs while protecting a young girl named Newt. Ripley embodies maternal strength and ferocity in the face of otherworldly dangers.

7. “Ginger Snaps” (2000)

This Canadian horror film by John Fawcett explores sisterhood and lycanthropy as metaphors for puberty when one sister begins to transform into a werewolf after being bitten.

8. “Mother!” (2017)

Darren Aronofsky’s allegorical thriller is rich with metaphorical themes revolving around creation, destruction, and the sacrificial role of women within them.

9. “Suspiria” (1977/2018)

Both Dario Argento’s original and Luca Guadagnino’s remake delve into femininity within the confines of a haunted dance academy, touching on themes of autonomy and agency against secretive, oppressive forces.

10. “Inside” (2007)

This French horror movie directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury paints a terrifying picture of pregnancy when a widowed pregnant woman is stalked by another woman bent on stealing her unborn child.

Each film dives deep into varying aspects of womanhood – from motherly instincts to social pressures – creating layered narratives that harness horror to shed light on female experiences.
