Where to Get the Best Sandwiches in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is renowned for its iconic cheesesteaks, but the city’s sandwich scene goes far beyond this famous dish. A myriad of delis, hoagie shops, and artisan eateries offer an impressive selection of sandwich options. Here’s where to get the best sandwiches in the City of Brotherly Love:

John’s Roast Pork

Established in 1930, John’s Roast Pork is a family-operated shop known for its succulent roast pork sandwiches. Located in South Philly, it also serves up one of the best cheesesteaks in town, rivaled only by its sharp provolone-topped namesake sandwich.

DiNic’s Roast Pork and Beef

Found in the Reading Terminal Market, DiNic’s has been delighting locals and tourists alike since 1918. Their roast pork sandwiches are legendary, especially when accompanied by broccoli rabe and sharp provolone.

Paesano’s Philly Style

This modern sandwich shop offers a twist on traditional Italian sandwiches. The ‘Paesano’ sandwich itself—a beef brisket creation with horseradish mayo, roasted tomatoes, pepperoncino, sharp provolone, and fried egg—is a must-try.

Tommy DiNic’s

Tommy DiNic’s, another gem inside Reading Terminal Market, keeps up the competition with its own version of the roast pork sandwich. The slow-cooked pulled pork combined with greens and sharp cheese makes it a foodie favorite.

For those craving Jewish deli classics, Hershel’s East Side Deli in Reading Terminal Market satisfies with towering corned beef and pastrami sandwiches that are as flavorful as they are massive.

Sarcone’s Deli

Sarcone’s Deli is a fifth-generation institution offering gigantic Italian hoagies. Using fresh bread from its adjacent bakery, Sarcone’s layers meats like prosciutto and soppressata with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and spices for an authentic Italian experience.

Steve’s Prince of Steaks

A relative newcomer compared to other historic spots but no less revered, Steve’s Prince of Steaks boasts multiple locations across Philadelphia. It excels in serving classic Philly cheesesteaks that compete with the best.

Middle Child

Middle Child is a quirky eatery bringing new life to the Philly sandwich scene. Their ‘So Long Sal’—packed with salami, ham capicola, provolone cheese, sun-dried tomato spread, arugula, red onion, and banana peppers—is both refreshing and hearty.

Each of these establishments offers something that encapsulates the spirit of Philadelphia through their distinct flavors and history. Whether you’re looking for something classic or a little more avant-garde, you won’t be disappointed by Philadelphia’s diverse array of sandwiches.
