What’s the Best Way To Pack Clothes for Moving?

Moving can be an overwhelming process, not least because you’re tasked with figuring out how to transport your entire wardrobe without wrinkles or damage. Thankfully, with a few tried and true strategies, you can ensure your clothes arrive at your new home just as they left your old one – neat and ready to wear.

1. Declutter Before Packing

Before you even begin packing, sort through your clothes and decide what you need to take with you. Donate or sell items that you no longer wear regularly. This will make packing easier and reduce the number of boxes you’ll need to move.

2. Use Wardrobe Boxes

Invest in a few wardrobe boxes for your most delicate or important clothing items, like suits, dresses, or coats. These tall boxes come with a built-in metal hanger bar that allows you to transfer items directly from your closet without folding them.

3. Roll, Don’t Fold

For most other clothes, rolling instead of folding can save space and prevent wrinkling. Lay the item flat, fold once along the long axis, then roll from top to bottom. This method works especially well for casual wear like t-shirts, jeans, and knitwear.

4. Bundle Wrapping

Bundle wrapping is a technique where you wrap clothes around a central core object, such as a pouch containing socks or underwear. This helps maintain the shape of the clothes and minimizes folds that can turn into creases.

5. Vacuum Seal Off-Season Clothing

For clothes that are out of season or infrequently worn, consider using vacuum-sealed bags. By removing the air, these bags reduce volume significantly, freeing up space in the moving truck for other items.

6. Use Suitcases Efficiently

Make use of every suitcase as a clothing “box”. Suitcases are particularly good for transporting shoes and bulkier items like sweaters or heavy jackets.

7. Separate Clothes by Season or Person

Pack separate boxes for each person in your household to make unpacking easier. You may also want to pack seasonal clothing together so you can easily find what’s appropriate for the weather post-move without having to rummage through everything.

8. Protect Your Garments

For extra protection against moisture or dirt during transport, line boxes with garbage bags or put individual items in plastic bags before packing them away.

By employing these techniques – decluttering first; using specialized containers like wardrobe boxes; rolling instead of folding; trying bundle wrapping; vacuum sealing off-season garments; efficiently utilizing suitcases; categorizing by season/person; and properly protecting garments – packing clothes for moving can be done efficiently and effectively, ensuring that your transition from old home to new is as smooth as possible when it comes to your wardrobe.
