What is Test Data Management?

The process of Test Data Management (TDM) has become increasingly important in the world of software testing. TDM is the process of planning, designing, creating, storing, managing and maintaining the data used in the software testing process. The main purpose of TDM is to ensure that the test data is accurate, complete, and up-to-date, and can be used effectively to identify defects and improve software quality.

Test data is used to validate the functionality of an application, and this data must be representative of the data that will actually be used in production. TDM involves creating test data that is suitable for the specific application being tested, and ensuring that the data is accurate, consistent and relevant.

When creating a test data management plan, the first step is to identify the data that will be required for the testing process. This includes both functional and non-functional data. Functional data is the data that is required for testing the functionality of an application, while non-functional data is the data that is required for testing the performance, security or other non-functional aspects of an application.

Once the data is identified, it must be created or synthesized. This involves taking sample data from production and modifying it to create test data that is representative of the real-world data that an application will process. This data must be scrubbed of sensitive information and personally identifiable information to protect the privacy of the users.

Test data creation can be a time-consuming process, and it is important to ensure that the data is properly managed throughout the testing process. This involves storing the data in a secure location, and keeping track of the modifications or updates made to the data as it is used in testing.

Effective Test Data Management is essential for ensuring the quality of the software applications, reducing the risks associated with software defects, and minimizing the time required for testing. By ensuring that the test data is accurate, consistent, and up-to-date, software development teams can identify defects early in the development process and improve the overall quality of the software product.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
