What Is Sony DSEE HX and Should You Switch It Off or On?

Sony DSEE HX, or Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX, is a proprietary technology developed by Sony that aims to improve the sound quality of compressed audio files. It works by analyzing the audio and then restoring some of the high-frequency information that might have been lost during the compression process.

The technology is available on a range of Sony devices, including smartphones, portable music players, and high-resolution audio players. Sony claims that DSEE HX can improve the sound quality of music files by up to four times, making even low-quality compressed audio files sound more like their high-resolution counterparts.

But should you switch it off or on? The answer to this question largely depends on your personal preference and the quality of your audio files.

If you primarily listen to high-quality uncompressed audio files, such as those in FLAC or WAV format, then you may not even need to use DSEE HX. These files already contain all the high-frequency information, so there’s not much that can be done to improve on them.

On the other hand, if you often listen to compressed audio files, such as those in MP3 or AAC format, then DSEE HX could be a game-changer for you. The technology can help to restore some of the high-frequency information that might have been lost during the compression process, resulting in a more detailed and lifelike sound.

That being said, some audiophiles might argue that DSEE HX alters the sound too much, making it less natural and possibly even introducing artifacts. In this case, switching it off might be the better option.
