What Is Golden Syrup And What Are The Best Ways To Use It?

Golden syrup, commonly known by its brand name ‘Lyle’s Golden Syrup’ in some countries, is a thick amber-colored form of inverted sugar syrup, made in the process of refining sugar cane juice into sugar. It is a byproduct of the sugar-making process, and it is typically made from sugar, water, and citric acid or lemon juice.

One of the main characteristics of golden syrup is its ability to retain moisture and add a smooth texture in various recipes. This makes it particularly popular for baking, where it can be found in traditional recipes such as classic British flapjacks (oat bars), steamed puddings, and treacle tarts. Its rich caramel flavor makes it an ideal combination for desserts and sweet dishes but can also contrast well with more savory flavors.

Here are some of the best ways to use golden syrup:

1.Pancakes and Waffles: Drizzle golden syrup over fresh pancakes or waffles for a delicious alternative to maple syrup.

2.Baking: Use it in place of corn syrup in cookies, cakes, frostings, and biscuits for added moisture and a deep golden color.

3.Dessert Sauces: Incorporate it into caramel sauces or chocolate ganaches to enhance the taste and consistency.

4.Marinades: Combine golden syrup with soy sauce, garlic, and spices to create a sweet and sticky marinade for meats like chicken or pork ribs.

5.Toast Topper: Spread it onto toast with butter for a comforting treat.

6.Porridge: Stir into hot oatmeal or porridge along with fruits and nuts for extra sweetness.

7.Ice Cream Topping: Serve it over ice cream along with chopped nuts for a simple yet delightful dessert.

B8.everage Sweetener: Add a spoonful to tea or cocktails where you might otherwise use honey as a sweetener.

Remember that golden syrup is sweeter than granulated sugar, so you may need to adjust quantities when substituting. It’s not only versatile but also an ingredient that brings in nostalgia for many, conjuring up memories of childhood treats and family gatherings centered around hearty home-baked dishes.
