What Every Adaptive Learning System Should Have

As we all know, school can be challenging, and some children struggle to keep up with the pace and content requirements. One way in which schools are trying to make life easier for students is by introducing adaptive learning systems.

An adaptive learning system aims to support learners in gaining skills and knowledge in a specific learning domain. In other words, it adapts to the different academic levels of the students in a class. This complex system enhances each student’s speed, accuracy, and quality concerning their learning processes.

Adaptive learning systems use many techniques. We will be discussing what every adaptive learning system should have to be successful.

Big Data

One of the essential features needed for an adaptive learning system is data. The system should feed the teacher with information about each student’s different learning abilities.

How will the teacher adapt to the different learning styles and levels if they don’t know what these levels are? Using this big data, they will be able to make changes in the class to accommodate every student or assess adapted behavior.

Detailed Design

The classes need to be planned very carefully. They should take all potential issues and problems into account. For example, if one section of the work stands out as more difficult than the rest, the system needs to plan how the teacher can carefully describe it to the class.

Artificial Intelligence

The system should be able to read how students interact when being taught. Based on this reading, it decides whether or not the lessons need to be changed or adapted even further. The adaptive learning system is pre-loaded with variables that allow it to change the lesson content based on how the students respond to the work. On the other hand, it should also adapt the lessons if students can grasp the content too quickly.

Feedback Mechanisms

Good adaptive learning systems should be able to alert students when they have gone wrong in their work. It should also have the ability to guide them through their mistakes and help them understand their errors.

These feedback mechanisms are essential for encouraging students when they are struggling. They also help maintain the interest of the class.

Quick Adaptation

Adaptive learning systems should be, as the name clearly states, adaptive. However, this level of adaptability must not be superficial. In other words, it can’t make broad adjustments to lessons based on a few variables.

The degree of adaptability needs to be finely tuned. The system should record and monitor the decisions made by students. As they make their way through the course, the system must adapt and change the lessons based on how the pupils are completing tasks.

More so, these adaptations shouldn’t be too apparent to the user. Their experience with the adaptive learning system must always remain positive, no matter how many times they have to redo a section or correct any errors that they make in the activities.
