We Asked a Savile Row Tailor to Test All the ‘Best’ T-Shirts You See in Social Media Ads

We all know the feeling—the temptation to click ‘buy’ on a whim after seeing ad after ad for the seemingly perfect t-shirt. But are those tees that flood our social media feeds really the best? To find out, we approached a Savile Row tailor, someone with a keen eye for quality and detail. They tested numerous shirts touted as the best on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, evaluating them based on material, construction, fit, comfort, and value for money.

Material: Our tailor started by examining the fabric of each shirt. Many brands boasted about their use of high-quality Pima or Egyptian cotton, known for their long fibers and softness. Others emphasized innovative blends meant to wick away moisture or reduce odor. The tailor closely inspected the weave and its density, searching for indicators of durability and how well each shirt might hold up after repeated washings.

Construction: A good t-shirt is more than just quality fabric. Its construction is crucial. Our expert analyzed the stitching of each garment. The tailor especially appreciated shirts with reinforced seams and details like hems that held up under tension—the signs of a garment made to last.

Fit: What sets a great t-shirt apart is often its fit. Our tailor tested each shirt on various body types to see how well they accommodated different shapes. They looked at shoulder seams, necklines, drape, and overall silhouette—favoring those that flattered without restricting movement.

Comfort: Of course, how a shirt feels when it’s worn is paramount. The tailor assessed the texture against the skin and whether the fabric’s weight was appropriate for its intended use—be it for layering or as a standalone piece in warmer weather.

Value for Money: Lastly, our expert considered whether these t-shirts offered value for money—a subjective measure that blends quality with cost. While some designer brands commanded steep prices due to their name alone, others justified their price tags with exceptional craftsmanship or material.

After weeks of wearing, washing, and living in these viral tees, our Savile Row tailor had formed strong opinions. Interestingly enough, some crowd favorites failed to impress while lesser-known brands emerged at the top of their list. The finding? Don’t believe all the hype—a carefully stitched tee from an earnest start-up might just outshine the overadvertised shirts dominating your newsfeed.

So before you give into that next enticing ad break for what looks like t-shirt nirvana, remember—it might be worth digging a little deeper into what constitutes quality in everyday fashion staples like the humble t-shirt.
