Ways to Fix the “An Unexpected Error Occurred” Error When Opening Ethernet Properties

The “An unexpected error occurred” error message is a frustrating experience for many network administrators when attempting to open Ethernet properties. This error message usually appears when trying to access a network connection, network adapter or any other network-related options. The good news is that there are several ways to fix this problem. Below are some of the effective ways to resolve this error and get back to business.

1. Update network drivers

Outdated or corrupted network drivers can cause the “An unexpected error occurred” error when opening Ethernet properties. Updating the network driver is the first step to take when you encounter this error. You can download the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website, then install it to fix the problem.

2. Reset TCP/IP

TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is a standard communication protocol used to connect devices to the internet. If the TCP/IP on your computer is corrupted, it can cause the “An unexpected error occurred” error. Resetting the TCP/IP stack can resolve the error. Follow these steps to reset TCP/IP stack:

a. Open cmd as an administrator.

b. Type the following command: netsh int ip reset.

c. Press enter.

d. Restart your computer to see if the error is resolved.

3. Run network troubleshooter

The network troubleshooter is a built-in tool in Windows that can identify and fix problems related to network connections. Running the troubleshooter can help fix the “An unexpected err

a. Click the Windows button and search for ‘Troubleshoot settings.’

b. Click on ‘Troubleshoot settings.’

c. Scroll down and click on ‘Internet Connections.’

d. Click on ‘Run the troubleshooter.’

e. Wait for the troubleshooter to run and apply the fixes.

4. Disable and Enable Network Adapter

Disabling and enabling your network adapter can also fix the “An unexpected error occurred” error. Follow the steps below to disable and enable network adapter:

a. Open Device Manager.

b. Locate the network adapter.

c. Right-click on the adapter and select ‘Disable device.’

d. Wait for a few seconds, then right-click on the network adapter again, and select ‘Enable device.’

e. Check if the error is resolved.

5. Scan for Malware

Malware can cause several problems on your computer, including network-related issues. Performing a full system scan for viruses and malware can help get rid of the “An unexpected error occurred” error. Use a trusted antivirus program to scan your computer and remove any malicious files that could be causing the error.
