US-Russia Relations Expected to Shift Under New Administration

The landscape of US-Russia relations is poised for significant changes as a new administration takes the helm in Washington. After four years of a tumultuous relationship under the Trump presidency, experts anticipate a recalibration of diplomatic approaches and policy priorities.

The incoming administration is expected to adopt a firmer stance on several key issues, including:

  1. Cybersecurity: In light of recent high-profile hacking incidents attributed to Russian actors, the new administration is likely to prioritize bolstering US cyber defenses and potentially implementing stricter sanctions in response to cyber attacks.
  2. Human Rights: There may be a renewed focus on human rights issues, with the US potentially taking a more vocal stance on matters such as the treatment of opposition figures in Russia.
  3. Arms Control: The extension of the New START treaty, which is set to expire in February 2021, is likely to be a top priority. Negotiations for a new arms control agreement may also be on the horizon.
  4. Ukraine and Eastern Europe: The new administration may seek to reassert US support for Ukraine and other Eastern European nations in their ongoing tensions with Russia.
  5. Climate Change: As the US rejoins the Paris Agreement, there could be opportunities for cooperation with Russia on climate-related issues, particularly in the Arctic region.

While a complete reset of relations is unlikely, diplomatic channels may see increased activity. However, fundamental disagreements on geopolitical issues such as NATO expansion and spheres of influence in Eastern Europe and the Middle East are expected to persist.

The coming months will be crucial in setting the tone for US-Russia relations over the next four years. Both nations will need to navigate a complex web of competing interests, historical tensions, and emerging global challenges.
