Tumalo State Park, nestled along the Deschutes River amidst the high desert splendor of Central Oregon, is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. With its convenient location just a few miles north of Bend, the park’s accessibility makes it an ideal spot for both day trips and extended camping vacations.

Open year-round, Tumalo State Park offers a peaceful retreat with a diverse mix of activities catering to all interests. The park’s well-maintained campgrounds provide ample space for tents, trailers, and RVs, with some sites offering electric hookups; picnic areas and yurts are also available for rent for those looking for a more unique experience.

A standout feature of the park is the Deschutes River itself, which meanders gently through the landscape. Here one can indulge in fishing or take a leisurely paddle down the river. For those who prefer to stay on land, Tumalo State Park doesn’t disappoint with its miles of hiking trails that traverse through igneous rock outcroppings and juniper-scented high desert terrain.

Wildlife watching is another favorite pastime at Tumalo State Park. The robust ecosystem supports a variety of bird species, and it’s not uncommon for visitors to spot beavers or deer during their stay. The clear skies of Central Oregon also make this park an excellent venue for stargazing.

Not only does Tumalo State Park offer numerous recreational opportunities and stunning scenery, but it also plays an important educational role with interpretive programs that delve into the natural and cultural history of the area. These programs contribute to park visitors’ understanding and appreciation of Oregon’s high desert region.

Through all seasons, the park’s landscape changes dramatically—from snow-capped trees in the winter to wildflowers dotting meadows in the spring—offering a different experience with each visit. This ever-changing beauty combined with an abundance of things to do ensures that Tumalo State Park remains one of Central Oregon’s best little state park getaways.
