MacBooks are renowned for their long battery life and sleek design, making them a favorite among professionals and students alike. However, even the mightiest of gadgets can encounter issues, such as battery drain when the laptop is supposedly sleeping. Let’s look at the top ten ways to address this problem so you can get back to enjoying your MacBook’s optimal performance.

1. Check Software Updates

Ensure your MacBook is up-to-date with the latest software updates. Apple often releases updates that can improve battery life and fix bugs that may cause excessive power consumption.

2. Manage Energy Saver Settings

Adjust Energy Saver settings in System Preferences. Set your MacBook to go into sleep mode more quickly when inactive, and disable Power Nap features that might cause battery drain while the lid is closed.

3. Verify Background Applications

Close unnecessary background apps before shutting your MacBook. Some applications running in the background can prevent your Mac from sleeping properly, thus draining the battery.

4. Reset System Management Controller (SMC)

Resetting the SMC can resolve power-related issues. This is a tried and true method for MacBooks with non-removable batteries.

5. Check Peripheral Devices

Disconnect peripheral devices when not in use. External hard drives and other peripherals can draw power from your MacBook, leading to unexpected battery depletion.

6. Perform an NVRAM or PRAM Reset

Resetting the NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac can help fix various hardware-related problems, possibly including abnormal battery drain during sleep mode.

7. Monitor Battery Health

Check your battery health by holding the Option key and clicking on the battery icon on the menu bar. Consider replacing your battery if it’s not performing as expected.

8. Turn Off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when closing your MacBook to prevent them from seeking out networks or devices which may use up power even when you’re not using them.

9. Use Sleep Mode Over Shutdown

Sometimes placing your Mac into sleep mode rather than shutting down can actually conserve more energy as it prevents all software from reloading upon start-up, thereby using less battery.

10. Seek Professional Help

If none of these solutions work, it may be beneficial to take your MacBook to a professional or an Apple Store for a diagnostic check.

Dealing with a draining battery on a closed MacBook can be frustrating, but by following these methods you’ll likely find a solution that restores its enduring power capabilities.
