This Is the Best and Only Way to Hang a Sweater

Properly hanging your sweaters is crucial for maintaining their shape and extending their lifespan. While many people resort to using hangers, this method can actually stretch out the shoulders and ruin the garment’s form. Here’s the best (and only) way you should hang your sweaters to keep them in pristine condition:

The Folding Method

Step 1: Prepare Your Sweater

  • Lay the sweater flat on a clean surface, face down.
  • Smooth out any wrinkles or creases.

Step 2: Fold the Sides

  • Fold each side of the sweater towards the center, about 1/3 of the way in.
  • The sleeves should lie flat against the body of the sweater.

Step 3: Create the Loop

  • Take the bottom 1/3 of the sweater and fold it up towards the collar.
  • Now, take your hanger and place it at the fold, with the hook facing towards the collar.

Step 4: Secure the Sweater

  • Fold the remaining top portion of the sweater over the hanger.
  • Adjust as needed to ensure the sweater is balanced on both sides of the hanger.

Why This Method Works

  1. Preserves Shape: By folding the sweater over the hanger, you avoid stretching out the shoulders or creating unsightly bumps.
  2. Prevents Stretching: The weight of the sweater is distributed evenly, preventing any one area from bearing too much stress.
  3. Saves Space: This method allows you to hang sweaters in your closet, saving drawer space.
  4. Easy Access: Your sweaters are visible and easily accessible, making outfit selection simpler.

Additional Tips

  • Use wide, padded hangers for extra support.
  • For very delicate or heavy sweaters, consider storing them flat in drawers.
  • Always clean your sweaters according to their care labels before storing.
  • Use cedar hangers or cedar blocks in your closet to repel moths and keep your sweaters fresh.

By following this folding and hanging method, you’ll ensure that your sweaters maintain their shape and quality for years to come. It may take a bit more time than simply throwing them on a hanger, but the extra effort is well worth it to protect your investment in quality knitwear.
