This 1991 VW Golf Country, for Sale on BaT, Was ahead of Its Time

In the early 90s, the automotive landscape was a different place. The emergence of new trends and shifts in consumer preferences have shaped today’s market, but back then, there were still some gems that stood out for being groundbreaking in their day. One such example is the 1991 Volkswagen Golf Country: a unique and innovative vehicle for its time that has recently been listed for sale on Bring a Trailer (BaT).

The 1991 VW Golf Country was, without a doubt, ahead of its time. What set it apart from others in its category was its integration of off-roading capabilities into a compact car format. This blend of functionality and versatility made the Golf Country an early trailblazer—long before our contemporary obsession with SUVs and crossovers.

Featuring a raised suspension and equipped with Syncro four-wheel drive, this special edition Golf was designed to conquer rough terrains without compromising on everyday usability. To protect its underbody components, Volkswagen fitted the Golf Country with skid plates—an essential feature for off-roading enthusiasts. Additional accessories, such as a brush guard and bullbar, further demonstrated its outdoor-friendly ethos.

Under the hood lay a 1.8-liter engine that produced 114 horsepower; although not necessarily impressive by today’s standards, it provided adequate power for the vehicle’s purpose during that era. With seating for five passengers and a roomy trunk space, it was suitable for families who sought adventures beyond paved roads.

This particular example listed on BaT boasts an attractive green exterior with signature white steel wheels and trademark “COUNTRY” graphics running along its sides. The interior remains largely original, with comfortable cloth upholstery and wooden accents that make it a charming relic from the past.

Despite its limited production run—only around 7,700 units were manufactured—the 1991 VW Golf Country has gained a steady following in the car collector community. Its rare, forward-thinking design combined with a capable all-wheel-drive system has endeared it to enthusiasts who appreciate the models that paved the way for the modern off-road vehicles we see today.

Now, with a pristine example listed on Bring a Trailer, this is the chance for discerning collectors to own a piece of automotive history. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience firsthand what made this 1991 VW Golf Country truly ahead of its time.
