The Best Way to Reheat Mashed Potatoes, According to Chefs

Reheating mashed potatoes while maintaining their creamy texture and rich flavor can be a culinary challenge, but with insights from professional chefs, you can learn how to revive this classic dish successfully. The key is to add a bit of moisture back into the potatoes and to reheat them gently.

The preferred method for reheating mashed potatoes is on the stovetop. Chefs recommend transferring your mashed potatoes to a pot and placing them over low heat. To prevent sticking and to restore creaminess, you can add a touch of milk or cream as they warm up. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon or spatula to ensure even heating without scorching.

Some chefs suggest incorporating a small amount of butter as the potatoes warm, which enhances the flavor and improves the overall texture. If you find your mashed potatoes are too thick after reheating, add more milk or cream gradually until you reach the desired consistency.

Alternatively, if you’re in a rush, microwaving is an option that many chefs acknowledge—though not their first choice. Place your mashed potatoes in a microwave-safe bowl, cover with a moist paper towel to prevent drying out, and heat in short intervals of about 30 seconds, stirring in between to distribute the heat throughout.

For larger gatherings or convenient hands-off reheating, using an oven can also yield good results. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C), transfer the mashed potatoes to an oven-safe dish, dot with butter, cover with foil, and heat for about 20-30 minutes until warmed through.

As a final pro tip: Don’t skimp on seasonings when reheating. Taste your reheated mashed potatoes before serving and adjust salt and pepper as necessary. By following these guidelines from culinary experts, you’ll ensure that your leftovers are just as delicious the second time around.
